Allie’s food hunt this time turned out to be dessert hunt for something cooling and soothing as she had been enjoying lots of grilled and fried stuffs. She stumbled upon a loh han kuo stall at the Cecil Street (Chit Tiau Lor) Market, just few blocks from the Sar Tiau Lor Hokkien Mee.
Recently the weather is so hot and I’m stuffing myself with too much fried and grilled stuffs. End up I am having a sorethroat.

Wouldn’t it be excellent to have something chilling and cooling to run down your throat in a hot sunny day?

Let me introduce to you the ‘loh han guo in a bowl’ at 7th road market aka 7 tiao lor ban san.

Loh han guo in a bowl which cost RM 2 per bowl is an execellent thrist quencher in a hot sunny day.

The loh han guo drink consist of some dried longan, canned longan, canned lychee and some jelly strips. This loh han guo drink is not too sweet and cold enough to sooth your throat.

Escaping the exam fever and mood, desmond-t came back to search for the best food at his hometown, Penang. He managed to treat himself with a mouth-watering traditional steamboat at Raja Uda and below is his experience. This place is just some short distance away from Ah Keat Seafood.

By desmond-t

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

When the exams get tougher, the hungrier I get. In the midst of exam preparation, I escaped back all the way to Penang and here I am again, bringing to you the very best of Penang food.

Last edition of my food galore featured the Dim Sum feast in Ipoh. How about some steamboat dinner this time?

It has becoming more and more trendy with steamboat restaurants everywhere promoting the eat-all-you-can style. Not for this case, this unique restaurant brings you back to the old-school style of the traditional steamboat.

Zi Wei Yuan Steamboat Restaurant is the name. From my knowledge, steamboat is actually a local cuisine of the native of Fuzhou clan. It can be seen here that the steamboat itself is not power by gas stove, instead the traditional charcoal method is being utilized. This actually makes the soup more tasty and brings out the real taste of steamboat by convention (if you get what I mean here). Try cooking for yourself by using gas stove and compare it by cooking similar food by using charcoal powered stove… you’ll probably understand the art of charcoal fire.

Located in the heart of the Butterworth, Zi Wei Yuan Steamboat is just blocks away from Jalan Ong Yi How (near Chung Ling Butterworth) and is a sight not to be missed in the area of Raja Uda. According to the locals, this shop is owned and runned by a Singaporean and has been successful since day 1 till today!

The secret of this sumptuos steamboat lies beneath the soup itself. The steamboat is served with the special fish soup that has been cooked to perfection with a lil’ taste of milky sour. If you could imagine the tasty has some similarity to the Fish Head Bee Hoon sold in the southern Peninsula whereby the soup is served with a little bit of milk too. Furthermore, the soup here at Zi Wei Yuan comes with the freshest of fish fillet.

More and more dishes… Yeah I never fail to have extra ordered my food… Extra? There are usually NO leftovers from me… HEHE

Fret not, although the menu is purely in Chinese, illiterate people like me still manage to order my set of food. You just need to point here and there and speak a lil bit of Hokkien…

This restaurant has a kinda simple type of menu, but then the list of food that is actually being served is definitely more than the ones that has been listed. For further add-ons, you will probably need some recommendation from the waiters. For my dinner trip, we chose the set menu which is around RM180 for 6 pax.

Less elaboration this time around. The food is far too tantalizing and I bet it beats the rest of the eat-all-you-can steamboat F-L-A-T . Not to mention Yuen Steamboat at Sunway (PJ) or Golden Gate Steamboat in Pulau Tikus (Penang), Zi Wei Yuan is a class above the rest. Don’t believe me? Google for yourself and read the rest of the food lovers review.

That is a steal for worth going again and again that you can eat to your hearts’ content.

This restaurant just started business for a week or two before we popped in for a visit. The Korean–Japanese BBQ with charcoaled styled pot and large fume extractor captured not just our attention but also our readers that got everyone talking. Two topics that were hot in this posting, grilled sliced beef and the green tea refill issue.

Our first visit towards this place could not satisfy our appetite that we actually went the second time for dinner to confirm our review. Still, the review drew flaks and debates that got both sides into heated discussions. Eventually, we were invited for another round of review recently and saw some improvements then.

We bumped into this place by chance and feel amazed with the numbers of people keep coming here for its famous ikan bawal goreng.
Most Refreshing Visit – Jin Xiu Art Gallery and Tea House

Stepping into this place will make you feel relaxed and calm where you get to enjoy brewing and drinking tea in slower pace. Besides, you could also take your time to appreciate an art collection on the second floor while enjoying your cup of tea.

Most Recommended Dish – Pearl Palace Restaurant Fish Steamboat

Eating fish is good for health and we certainly believe this dish will suit almost everyone. This steamboat is like normal steamboat with the twist of having lots of fish ingredients. Coupled with the special sauce provided, this fish steamboat definitely worth to be recommended to our readers.

The Spiciest Dish – Restoran Toipark Vilage’s Spicy Hot Pot

Spicy Hot Pot was the spiciest dish we had ever tasted until now and it came with options to increase the level of spiciness per your tolerance level. Some readers feedback that they were able to cure blocked nose or ease the pass motion which we believe was due to high chili concentration in the pot.

The Cheapest Dish – Raja Uda Lok Lok

Where in Penang can you find a 30 cent per stick lok lok these days? Well, only at Raja Uda as we know of. You can literally eat everything to your hearts’ content and satisfy your appetite with the varieties of lok lok items, quite a bargain in these recent times.

Best Relaxing Place – Hai Nan Town Nyonya & Hainanese Restaurant

Despite having nothing to brag about when it comes to food, we completely agree that the environment here at Tanjung Marina just amaze us with the true alfresco dining by the sea. The sea breeze adds extra points making the overall ambience better.

Most Unique Dish – Claypot Soup Sungai Ara

Two big barrels located just outside this economy rice stall caught our curiosity and upon further investigation, we found that the big barrels were actually heating pot for herbal soup. The herbal soup was quite delicious and nutritious at the same time.

Most Unique Dining – Jemputree Restaurant

Dining on a tree was another breath taking experience that you should try once in a while, especially inside the town area itself! Even if you did not dine on the tree, the dining experience at Jemputree was enough to give you some a totally new, unique dining experience.

Most Authentic Dish – Toh Soon Roti Bakar

Ahh…the sight of bread being toasted using charcoaled fire brings back a lot of nostalgic memories of childhood years. The roti bakar here is the most authentic method we have found so far and the crisp roti bakar is just the perfect dish for breakfast~!

Best Overseas dishes – Mango Desserts + Dim Sum

Mango desserts at Hui Lau Shan and XL size dim sum are the best dishes we have tasted overseas in 2008. The sweet mango taste in every dessert at Hui Lau Shan and also extra large dim sum at London DIm Sum really made the trip a satisfying one.

Most Stinky Dish – Hong Kong’s Stinky Tofu

It is stinky as it sounds, stinky as it smells but delicious as it tastes. The reputation of stinky tofu has somehow been misleading that most people will actually shun it upon the sight of this stinky tofu. However, if you dare to try it, you will find the most amazing piece of tofu you will ever taste, full of flavour!

Most Comical Experience – Golden Triangle

Spent RM60 to book the whole restaurant… hehehe

Mention Chai Leng Park and you will likely to get people talking about foods available there especially Wai Sek Kai. This is one of the strategic places within Prai area where it can be synonymous to a food hub in Prai area. Whether you are here for lunch or dinner or even supper, the place is usually buzzing with food related activities.

After eating here quite frequently, the same old question keeps coming back. What to have for lunch or dinner? Well, you can choose the option of having Claypot Chicken Rice and Curry Fish Head or maybe Beng Huat Chicken Rice. If rice is not what you prefer, you can opt for Taiwanese foods at Toipark Village or the widely available choices at Wai Sek Kai itself.

Kedai Kopi Yong Heng is located just opposite Wah Hong restaurant at Jalan Kurau 1. Wah Hong is a restaurant popular among the locals as well as expatriates working at the Prai Free Industrial Zone. There are plenty of parking lots over here and it was not that “jammed” and crowded compared to Wai Sek Kai.

The Hor Fun stall is the main business for this coffee shop at the evening. Typically the stall will start selling at 5pm onwards until late night. But, most of the time the supply will run out by 10pm. We could see people keep coming non-stop to pack for take away although some chose to dine in.

It did not take long before our turn came and we were served with two plates of Char Hor Fun. The smell of the hor fun had the “wok hei” (a bit of burnt smell) that most of us looked forward to when eating hor fun. This smell brought out the tempting desire for us to quickly start eating. Huat Koay had a hard time this round to take the photos… Haha

The freshly cooked hor fun tasted quite smooth and not that hard either. The types of ingredients although limited, came in quite a generous portion. There were vegetables, lean meat, prawns and pork liver. Taste wise, it was towards salty taste with strong aroma and the gravy was quite full of taste as well.

The sambal accompanying this char hor fun was quite spicy and a little bit of the sambal could make you feel hot enough to sip some water immediately. For those who like spicy char hor fun, include the sambal into the hor fun and you will definitely like it. We could see Tam Ciak started to sweat already…

The owners still consistently kept the stall clean and hygienic as possible despite having a lot of wok-frying activities. It was just something worth mentioning to our fellow readers…

This Tex-Mex restaurant needs no introduction to most of the western food lovers. Chili’s Grill & Bar is finally available at Penang although PenangTuaPui have not made the trip there until recently. After all, you can see tones of review rushing to write about this one and we are just taking our own sweet time.

Chili’s Grill & Bar is located at the ground floor of G-Hotel, the hotel just next to the Gurney Plaza shopping mall. The last time we came here was to have a lunch at Miraku and it was quite some ago too. The other Tex-Mex restaurant we have visited was Ribs BBQ at Jalan Burmah.

It was around tea-break time when we arrived there and we decided not to order much as dinner time was coming soon. Yet, we still ordered some dishes that could keep us full for some time. Well, Huat Koay was suggesting we could order Kids’ meal instead but we still end up ordering a main dish with two additional bottomless dishes – tostada chips and drinks.

Yes, TuaPui kind of like the bottomless idea as we can eat as much as we want to make our money worth spent, do you not agree? It is similar to buffet where you can help with as much helping as you want, provided you can finish the food. Hey, wastage is not allowed if you cannot finish it~!

The tostada chips (RM9.95++) came in basket filled chips and a small bowl of Chili’s very own salsa sauce. The chips served as great appetizer and continued to fill up our out mouths every now and then. The sounds of chips being crushed inside your mouth was something like what Huat Koay did to Fei Fei at StarView… hahaha

The salsa sauce was quite addictive as well as we kept asking the waiters to fill up the sauce more than we asked to fill up the basket. Guessed we ordered the basket refill three times for the tostada chips…Hehehe The sauce was sour based and slightly sweet and salty. Dipping the tostada chips into the sauce and then put it into your mouth was just awesome.

The bottomless drink (RM8.95++) was not something unique but rather pleasant to have. Instead of having free flow of soft drinks, we can have free flows of fruit juices this round. You can opt for Apple, Green Guava, Mango, Orange, Pineapple and Tomato.

The main dish for this meal was Classic Chicken Fajitas (RM31.95++) that was served sizzling with onions and bell peppers/ capsicums. The chicken was grilled to perfection and looked appetizing when it was served to us. Besides grilled chicken, you can also opt for juicy, marinated beef steak version of fajitas or if you feel indecisive of which one to have, go for the combo meal instead!

The sizzling grilled chicken fajita was quite sufficient for two persons even though the chicken portion did not look that much. It came with warm tortilla as well as the dressing for the fajita consisted of guacamole (avocado based dip), pico de gallo (condiments of chopped tomato, onion and chili), cheese as well as sour cream.

You can put any ingredients you want into the fajita as long as you have ordered them upfront. Besides, the ingredients provided for this fajita set, Tam Ciak crushed some tostada chips onto the fajita as well before enjoying bites and bites of crunchy and mouthful fajita.

Not bad for a tea time meal we had at Chili’s and it would just another hour before we go for our dinner later. So what’s for dinner? hehehe

Qing Tian Coffee Shop at Chulia Street is a place where you can find lip-smacking char siew. This coffee shop is located below Sky Hotel which is near to a Fuji Film building.

A ‘siew mei‘ platter which consist of char siew, roasted pork (siu yuk) and chinese sausage (cheung). The char siew taste good in a way that the meat is tender and very fragrant. Although the slices is not as thick as the one I ate at Hong Kong, but still it’s good enough for one bite.

PenangTuaPui is proud to introduce another food blogger to join PenangTuaPui’s family. desmond-t will be our latest guest contributor where he will bring food related content not just Penang but also central region; Klang Valley and surrounding area. This will help to expand our coverage yet our main focus is still on Penang Food as it has always been. Please join us to welcome desmond-t!!! Original article can be found here.

By desmond-t

In my maiden food post in this very blog, let me suggest a hidden treasure of seafood in Penang. If you are not one of the “slaves” of the Free Industrial Zone in Bayan Lepas, chances are that you might not even heard of the place called Teluk Tempoyak, near Batu Maung.

This edition of food post, desmond-t will bring to you an upclose and personal review of what he regards as CHEAP, VARIETY, COZY and TANTALIZING seafood in a Malay style delicacy. It’s Raya Festivities, of course we shall indulge in this special cuisine.

Getting there? Hmm, pretty easy. Every Penangite should be able to get to the FIZ, for sure right? (unless u’re one of the lost cavemen, you don’t deserve to enjoy this then) At the Batu Maung War Museum and fishless Aquarium intersection, you can spot a huge signboard leading to Teluk Tempoyak.

Once again, discounting for any blunder of you being so blind to miss the signboard, the journey should be pretty straight forward. There is no “road not taken” options anymore, just follow wherever the road leads you.

There are two seafood stalls there. Erm, I sincerely do not regard them as stalls, instead restaurants. They are pretty spacious indeed. Of the two restaurants, I went to the inner one, just beside the seashore.

Clad in vests, uniformed and soft-spoken, do you still regard them as “warung” by the road side? Hmm… ada standard ok… Kasi sikit respect, don’t play play ah!

As you can see, there’s such a wide range of seafood, you can choose for yourself and request them to prepare the dish as per your liking. Thumbs up for the freshness.

Ambience? Cool, as it is located in a Malay fishing village, it has a pretty serene surrounding. Perfect sea breeze would definitely blow you way mesmerizing the charming shore. But if it’s a low tide season, you better stuck up your nostrils as it’s gonna stink with the smelly mud sea breeze…

Satay for appetizer isn’t really ideal, that’s for my case. First, the stuffy meat tend to fill up your capacity unless your freaking hungry cos you got lost while on your way up here! Besides, the satay is “modernized” already since they are grilling it on a gas stove. This is kinda weird way of cooking, at least that’s what I felt.

Ok, ok…. OKAY! I’ll let pictures do the talking from here onwards. Stuff you with gluttony, make you drool and hungry rightaway! Bon Appetite!

Crabs - Cooked with their “Special Sauce”, shiny and yummy!

Deep Fried Sotong - Same la, typical one, you can bet it tastes the same everywhere.

Vege: Kai Lan Char Chiap, LOL Believe me or not, even the Malays can recognize Hokkien dishes’ name.

Typical Cockles or Kerang Bakar.

Sotong Masak Cabai/ Cili - Tastes equally good and recommended!

A must try in Teluk Tempoyak is Ikan Bakar.

You can just tell them which fish to bakar and how do you wish to “bakar” it. Thumbs and toes up!

…and that sums it all for this edition of food review.

We passed by this mini hawker center some time back to pack the desserts while on our way to friend’s place. This time Allie went to the same place again to try the sambal koay teow (dry version of koay teow th’ng) and it captivated her for a while although it was not love at first sight with the sambal koay teow. Original article is here.

By Allie

During weekend, it’ll always be late lunch for me … or shall I just replace it tea time? Normally I’ll take my brunch around 11am… so my stomach will be filled till evening.

It’s always hard to find food in the evening because most are closed or are yet to open … or just my problem in food finding?

From Bayan Lepas, we drove to pulau tikus, then finally to tanjung tokong directions. Then we suddenly thought of this hawker stalls along Mt. Erskine which is recommended by a friend.

It’s a long stretch of stalls opposite the very famous Mt. Erskine Western Food stall. A wide varities of hawker foods can be eaten here. But this Sambal Koay Teow attracted me most.

When the koay teow was served, I was like ‘oh, so it’s just a normal dry koay teow with sambal serve separately’. Feeling = disappointed at that moment. A bowl of fishball and meatball was served together.

First mouthful brings more disappointment as it taste so so only. Then my bf suggested maybe we should eat it together with the sambal. Since the sambal provided is quite little, we decided to add all into the koay teow.

First mouthful after we mix in the sambal, a sense of excitment as the sambal taste so spicy and it really added flavour into the dry koay teow. Yummy. Second mouthful … third mouthful… no complain… disappointment gone… Haha… But it’s too spicy after we add in all sambal. Maybe we should add in bit by bit until it taste just right.

Just one dried koay teow is not enough for us la… hehe… So we order hokkien mee. The hokkien mee doesn’t taste good to me. The soup and the chili are not able to give me any omph…

Our mouth still feel itchy for food after the hokkien mee. So, we ordered char koay teow. The portion is very small. Taste wise, so so.

This place offer a wide varities of drinks. Everything looks so yummy to me, but too bad my stomach is filled with 3 plates of noodles and 1 cup of coconut drink. Haha.. big eater :-p

This is ice kacang is ordered by my friend. It looks good with lots of ingredients, but I didn’t taste it.

Will definitely back here for the sambal koay teow and to try out their ice kacang.
