Lim Aik Chew Best Fresh Water Prawn in Town | Penang Seafood

Nibong Tebal, Huat Koay’s home town, just wonder why there is only one post (Seafood Porridge) about this town in PenangTuaPui website? Wondering?

We too.. :P Nibong Tebal, a small town located Southern part of Seberang Perai, you may take the Jawi toll exit and turn left upon the first traffic light to reach Nibong Tebal town in 10 min.

Apart from the seafood porridge that we recommend months back, we will cover the fresh water prawn this round. When people talk about fresh water prawn, the first thing flashes in their mind will be Tualang fresh water prawn, a small town not far away from Tronoh, Ipoh.

You would surprise to get fresh water prawn at Nibong Tebal too. Lim Aik Chew, a wooden shop house located by the river did serve the fresh water prawn.

There is 2 ways to get there, either you drive straight to the front of the shop (getting car park is a challenge) or you can park your car at the other side of the river and walk across the bridge.

Here is the photo from the both side of the bridge.. Thanks to Ken on the photo taken.

The other side of the bridge where you can park your car and walk over.

The photo shot from the restaurant side towards the bridge.

During our last Ipoh makan makan trip, Huat Koay insist of getting us to stop by to try the prawn before depart to Ipoh. Among 7 of us on the trip, 1 is having slight fever, and 1 is having sore throat. Getting them to try the prawn might be a challenge. But Huat Koay insisted, we don’t have much choice.

Upon arriving, we noticed there is one row of old wooden shop lot, with no sight of big signboard stated “FAMOUS FRESH WATER PRAWN” nor photo of celebrities holding the prawn like what we saw at Bukit Tambun or Batu Kawan seafood area.

The old and poor decorated (shud be non-decorated) wooden house, pack with people, and no air-con. Everyone is grabbing bread on hand and prawn on the other hand. It is very interesting to see and curious to know what so special about this place.

We settled down on the table Huat Koay’s reserved earlier, and he make all the order without even ask what we want. :(. Tao Hua keep reminding him not to order spicy type of dishes as her hubby and kid can’t take spicy food, furthermore she is having slight sore-throat.

I saw Tau Hua and his hubby face turn green when the first dish served. Yes, Curry Fresh Water Prawn is the first to serve. I think you would turn green if you saw that too. Spicy and hot…….

We normally didn’t take it with rice. They served it with bread, “bengkali roti“.

The prawn’s price range from RM59-RM65 depends on market price and you can opt to have the salt water prawn which range from RM70-RM80.

It is cooked with curry powder and you can smell it from far. It won’t make your tongue numb. But the freshness of the prawn together with the curry. I can’t explain how it taste until you get the bread to dip on the curry and put in your mouth. It matched perfectly with the bengkali roti. But it is depends if you like the curry powder type.

But to Tau Hua’s hubby it tastes so yummy and he can’t even stop having it one after another, forgetting he is having fever. :(, I love it too but others might not like the “powder” type of curry.

Besides the curry, it did serve the steamed version. We did have it before with Ken, Food Point of Interest, and BBO. It is fresh and delicious too. If you wish to taste the freshness of the prawn, you should try the steam one.

We did ordered the deep fried fish with bird eye chilies. Huat Koay intention is to let us try to original freshness of the fish without any additional sauce on the fish. It tastes so fresh even after the deep fried. Just love it.

Huat Koay didn’t get us down and we will regret if we insisted to stay on our own plan to head straight to Ipoh. Thanks buddy. :P

Sometime the fresh water prawn is limited, so please call them to reserved before you make your trip there. ok? But you can choose other prawn which is great too.

PTP thanks for posting, beats having to drive down to Tualang. I really need to be more adventurous and explore mainland food options. Couldnt really gauge size of prawns from pics but were they like 200-300 gms each ? Better late than never, but great work on very informative site !!!

I don’t know why the markets in Penang don’t sell fresh water prawns. It’s one of the best ingredients ever.
