Yummy Cuisine Sungai Ara - Chu Cha

The latest food outlet to arrive in Sungai Ara is situated at the new row of shophouses opposite the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara branch office.

Yummy Café is located at the corner lot and easily visible from the main road, so you can’t miss it.

Being the ‘new kid on the block’, there were lots of customers who came to get a taste of this new place. And of course, PenangTuaPui is never far behind on the food trail *wink*.

The thing that separates Yummy Café from the regular chu-char places around is the modern feel of the layout and furnishing. Although there is no air conditioning, the restaurant premise and design is airy enough to not make you feel stuffy and hot

We were recommended the belacan fried chicken, nyonya steam fish and satay prawns. Being TuaPuis, we readily accepted the recommendations and even topped it off with 1 additional dish :).

It doesn’t take long for the first dish to arrive after order. The first dish landed on the table is stir fried bean sprouts with salted fish (Fei Fei’s oldtime favourite)- RM6.00 . Fei Fei will tell you that he thought it tasted good with just the right amount of salted fish thrown in.

The belacan fried chicken wings (RM8.00) received the most thumbs up votes. The fragrance of the belacan is just right (we are belacan-lovers, sorry) and the wings were fried to a very crispy, non-oily golden brown. Delicious! In fact, we spied a couple at the next table who were savouring only 1 large plate of chicken wings!

Nyonya steam fish (RM22.00) had an interesting sauce with the harmonious combination of spicy, sour and sweet for our tastebuds. Our only complaint was that the sauce dried up very fast due to the flame underneath. The fish was fresh and we fought over the cheek-area flesh (but that’s another story..hehe).

The last dish arrived was satay prawn (RM16.00). The grilled prawns on skewers with satay sauce got mixed reviews.

The satay sauce was more on the sweet side and did not have the rich fragrant peanut aroma. It was a rather unusual dish where the prawns and sweet satay sauce did not seem to blend so well (but that’s just our humble opinion).

And just some trivia to share, the shop has its origins from the evening choo-char at TYY coffee shop down the road.

been there. its not good at all. waiting time too long during dinner. some more the service is bad. we came 1st but they serve the other table 1st. so the oth table got to eat 1st. not fair. also the food doesn’t taste nice. not going there ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. penangtuapui

    24 June, 2009, 21:44

    susan,

sorry to hear the dining experience you had… btw, what did you order that night? was it something similar to what we’ve ordered or something else… we actually asked the owner to recommend so that we can gauge their standards and the dishes served to us were acceptable

In terms of serving the other tables first.. it’s something that they have to work on … that’s towards service level already… we’ll see if we can get the owners to improve based on the feedback here…

    lovetoeat,

by penang standard, it’s nothing special because it’s something we’re so used to eat already ;)
and it’s a chu char place… so no air cond is expected, right? :p
but it’s true certain area inside the dining area can be quite warm…

  30. penangtuapui

    PenangGinNa, HaoJiak

We give the opinions based on our experience that time and the food we ordered when we were there. There are other factors which we may not experience like other readers did but one thing for sure, the owner must have experienced it all..

The best thing we can do is to provide these inputs to the owner and decide if the claims are true and hopefully they be able to work on it . This is a new restaurant, they may have more to polish before being a good one.

In fact, by having this kind of open communication, we do hope, along the way, the miscommunication gap and service gap between the customers’s expectation against what the restaurant owners can provide will become less…

Of course, if the restaurants decide not to act on it, it’s their call… we’re merely the intermediaries ;)

we had been to the place twice, first we order our favourite dishes such as kangkung, steam egg, pai kut ong, all is ok… not really bad lar…. 2nd time just pretty recent one, we try their nyonya fish, I agree with tuaPuis, it is appertizing and we like it a lot. The belacan fried chicken we ordered, is good too, we like it. the rest is ok la, but the lady boss is like that one.. last time at TYY also like that, we get use to it liao… heehee, but will go back to try the other dish as the price is reasonable.

The food is very expensive, a small plate of sweet and sour fish cost RM16 (in which the fried fish is not fresh at all). The service is extremely BAD !!

I think since so many bad comments, it’s no need for me to add more.

I stayed in Sungai Ara Spring Field, we have tried the food once its start operation. The taukeh soh is damn rude, the way they take order is damn unprofessional. They are so lousy on recommendation on what is the nice food there.

I have even tried to order a take away which simply take me > 1 hour and it’s not because of the crowd, it’s simple misunderstand between the front desk and kitchen.

And if you observe carefully, their system, between the front desk and kitchen is so paliah. The waiter need to bring the paper to the back, which out of the restaurant where is the kitchen is located at the back. I just wondering why can’t they make a hole to pass the paper instead?

Anyway, not recommend from a Sungai Ara people…

me and my husband are regulars there, since we eat out everyday. Overall, their food is tasty, but a bit pricy for chu cha standard. A RM22-24 steam fish, it only about my (lady)palm size, not flashy. Do ask for their special dish, as the kitchen will sometimes cook something u won’t get in normal days. I had their ‘Dong Buo Ruo’ is super duper good. We recently visted more often to the 929 chu char at the back, where they have the morning Dim Sum. 929’s is more reasonable at price (especially fish), and reasonable food.

  40. 4 November, 2009, 14:37

oh no…why still cant get published after submitting? I’ll give a final try… Summary: food good, pricy for a chu char standard. recommend: dong puo ruo (special dish, not everyday’s menu). Another suggestion: 929 Chu Char at the back, where they hv Dim Sum in the morning. Reasonable price, especially fish. But I prefer Yummy for d food .
