Balik Pulau Durian Makan Trip 1
Yes, it is the time of the year again. The season where durian lovers will search high and low behind island (balik pulau) for the best durians to taste, to savour and to enjoy… Mmmmmm mmmmmm… The thought of eating durian will simply make our tastebuds go wild, anticipating the different taste and smell that we will encounter.
(Let’s sing to the tune of Mama Mia)
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I’ve missed you(Yes, we are talking about durians here..hehe)

The king of fruit is always a love or hate affair depending on which camp you are at. For the lovers, this is a season to look forward to in search of their favourite “fix” or “gian” to enjoy a good, delicious durian. For those who hate durian, there is nothing more than trying to avoid the abundance of durians available at every corner. Luckily for us, we just love durians… hehe

We started our our durian journey with this stall, Durian Cap Kaki or Foot’s brand durian on the way to Balik Pulau. You need to ask for the price upfront as it is slightly higher compared to those stalls at Balik Pulau.

No price for guessing, you will get loads of durians here including the varieties of Lipan and D14

Take your pick, you can have them here or take them home.

This is one of the famous durian stalls available, the newspaper cuttings and articles provide good evidence

If you never know how to open a durian, you either leave it to the experts or make sure you put on gloves or use thick piece of cloth to hold the durian while ripping it open

Of course, for the experts, easy does it effortlessly.. Well, we were just waiting to enjoy our durians minus the hassle of opening it :p

The sibling of Boeing comes in a form of durian, the 747. 747 is this year’s nominee for competition with its colour towards dull yellowish and slight bitter taste. Yet, the bitterness is not as strong as ling fung chiau. This type costs around RM18-24 per kilo.

This is D14, the winner of last year’s competition

D14 has small seeds but lots of flesh, which can be quite filling too

It has brighter yellow colour and costs around RM15 to RM18 per kilo

Of the three different types of durians we had, we felt Lipan is the best.

Lipan costs RM10 per durian and each of the sides has only two seeds with solid flesh

This durian was the best we had tasted and quite fragrant too. Mind you. we are speaking for durian lovers’ perspective… hehee

Besides durian as the main cast, they do have other varieties of fruits here as well, like longan.

and lychee

and make sure you take this one after eating durian. Mangosteen definitely helps to cool down your body after the durian feast

Behind the Cap Kaki Durian Stall, there is a small zoo which you can take a short walk to digest your earlier feast

We captured this dragon fruit shot which the fruit was about to ripe

and the other one still growing…

poisonous or not, we have no idea …

anybody wants to ride a pony?

or hear the bird chirping?

or perhaps play with the ostrich?? Hehehe
That was our first stop for durian tour. We went on to hunt for more stalls around Balik Pulau area as well as within Penang island. The next post will show you some of the durian stalls available that we had visited. By the way, the price indicated here is based on this single stall only. Different stalls may have different prices, cheaper or more expensive. So it is good to always ask for the price.
