Penang Food | Restoran Yu Lin @ Bukit Mertajam

Bukit Mertajam, despite being a small town has its charms when it comes to food as well. One of the reasons is also due to the dense population for a small town and of course, the demand for food. BM has quite a number of chu char places but at the same time a few restaurants that cater dinner functions and events. We were here at Restoran Yu Lin to celebrate Tam Ciak’s significant half’s birthday…

Restoran Yu Lin is just slightly across a large dim sum outlet “dian xing cheng” and just a corner turn from Medan Selera Sentosa where we had their gado-gado or pasembur.

The interior of Restoran Yu Lin is well lit and can accomodate a large number of crowds at anytime. It does look neat and spacious.

The cashier counter with the lady boss’s sister (in black shirt). She is actually a relative of one of the Penang Bloggers… :) (Thanks to effie T for the clarification)

Snacks (RM1.00) to keep your your mouths busy while waiting for the foods to be served. If you do not want this, do ask them to take it back as it is charged to your bill.

Our must have items during meals, chopped chilies and sambal. Yea, we are used to having that already.

Coffee, (ang moh) tea or chinese tea? Well, if you bring your own tea leaves, they will charge RM1.00 for the water usage. regardless of refills.

The herbal tea prepared on their own, RM2.00 each

Mee Tiao or noodles (RM10.00) with lots of ingredients and nice fried fragrance. This first dish was just right to open up our appetite for coming dishes.

Sizzling Plate Tofu (RM12.00) had lots of tofu cubes but the gravy is a bit diluted. Would be nicer for us if the gravy was a bit thicker…

Green vegetables at RM8.00. Cooked at the right heat and time that the vegetables remained crunchy still.

Fried Soft Shell Crabs (RM28.00)  sprinkled with fried egg mixture which was poured onto strainer before landed on hot oil.

Sea Cucumber (RM40.00) was quite good and chewy.

Steamed pomfret (RM70.00) was quite fresh and tender in its meat.

Prawns in Claypot with tang hoon (RM30.00). The prawns served were fresh and the tang hoon gravy was quite delicious too. This reminds us of a popular dish when we visited Hadyai some time ago which they used small wok instead of claypot.

Claypot Duck with Yam (RM15.00) was another dish with thumbs up. The meat was tender with less duck smell and the yam was cooked till soft but still had its texture.

If you love the fatty meat or “dong po ro(RM15.00), this will be a dish to order. With its thick layer of luscious fat, it will definitely make you drool over this dish…

Fresh fruits courtesy from the restaurant. Not all the time will you get fruits though. We were there twice but only got it complimentary once.

Thanks for the write up. The steam promfet, from the pic, looks like a medium size fish, imho, is quite expensive @RM70 (RM48 seems fair) and the prawns in claypot is also somewhat pricy@RM30 (RM22 is more resonable) Didn’t you feel it? or this is the expected price to pay for Chinese Food. Thanks again

PTP, suggest you create a grading system for the food, / ambience of the eartery, / value-for-money, from 1 to 10, with 10 being the ultimate heavenly. use 0.5 to split hairs if you must. This way, we can know what to order. I often make mental notes and award points for each dish for every new place I visit. I will then decided if it is worth the mention. Cheers
