Penang Food | Kuan Yim Theng Lor Mee
We were looking for the King Street Koay Teow Th’ng that some readers and blogger friends recommended us to go but we not that lucky that day. Ended up, we had lor mee near Kuan Yim Theng temple.

The place is Hai Beng Coffee Shop, located just across the Goddess of Mercy temple.

Probably because of the iconic place the Kuan Yim Theng is, this stall ride on its popularity as well.

The lor mee stall setup..

The bowl of lor mee (RM3.50 per bowl) that comes with extra thick gravy, much thicker than the one opposite Lam Wah Ee hospital. It has quite a strong 5 spices fragrant too.

You can order extra ingredients like pig skin, intestines or even chicken feet. Hmm.. where is the garlic sauce??

Something different that we noticed on this shop. It has two extra bottles that we normally used for chili sauve and ketchup in western food.

Once when we finished half the bowl and we realised the garlic sauce and the chili were stored in these two bottles!

They do have lor bak as side order with each cost RM1.50 per piece. This place typically opens in the morning.

Carlos,
The 5 spices sometimes can make a dish looks and taste fragrant. It’s a preference to individuals…
only went there once… think I can’t recall the taste already lor…
Yea..The five spice powder is much overpowering at this stall.. : ) There’s is one stall selling only Lor Mee in Ipoh Lane (Jelutong morning market) which is quite good..and you can add black vinegar into the lor mee which I found the taste quite distinctive..more flavourful and the vinegar actually enchance the taste..
lor mee looks too starchy.
New Kid On The Blog,
want to go again to recall the taste?
MaryJane,
Black Vinegar… that sounds interesting…. yea, we should check it out.. Thanks for recommending
Last visit was a few years back when I started blogging. Felt standard dropped so stopped going. (-_-)
oh this one certified popular then! hahaha …. passed by this shop while going to pray last month. saw the article from a book on the lor mee.
but i aint a fan of lor mee anyway.
You shouldn’t have missed the King Street Koay Teow Th’ng located beside the Great Eastern insurance company. The only set back about going there is that it’s not easy to find a car park lot, however, not many people know that you can actually park at the basement car park of Great Eastern & it only costs a riggit per hour. To avoid waiting for too long for the koay teow I suggest that you go there in the morning and before 12.15 pm. Let me tell you a little bit of history about this Koay Teow stall just to show how popular is his Koay Teow. The koay teow seller, Ah Sai, has actually started his business at the Tong Hong coffee shop along Beach Street (Lbh Pantai) opposite the India House for many many years and later moved to a corner coffee shop at Bishop Street due to shopowner taking back the shop. Owing to the popularity of his koay teow he continued to have his regular customers patronising his koay teow but it was not for long before Ah Sai had to move to the present address at King Street. I was given to understand by Ah Sai that that he was not happy with the Bishop Street coffee shop owner’s attitude because Ah Sai’s stall enjoyed a good business whereas another stall selling other mee staff beside Ah Sai’s stall did not do well so much so that coffee shop owner very often tried to pull Ah Sai customers to the other stall. When Ah Sai left this particular coffee shop it had to close down not long after the incident.
Max,
That’s a great piece of history you have about this King Street KTT. Well, we found it in the end but it was closed… so we’ll be going again soon!!
Thanks for the car park tip too
[...] roti bakar has strong 5 spices too just like the lor bak at Guan Yim Teng. Well, if you like 5 spices, then why not try this [...]
