Restaurant | Madam Kwan’s - KL’s MidValley Megamall
While in Midvalley during our recent shopping trip to KL, we had the opportunity to dine at Madam Kwan’s which was famous for their nasi lemak. It must be special enough and possibly their best selling dish that their brand name actually carries “Nasi Lemak” as well.
Of course, there were other specialties like fish head curry which came in rather big serving portion. We did not order but saw the next table ordering them and it looked about same size as Juru Fish Head Curry. Madam Kwan’s had another branch at KLCC as well but have not reached Penang yet. It is just a matter of time…

Madam Kwan’s Cafe, Cuisine and Nasi Lemak boasts itself as a truly Malaysian Cuisine. But there are non-Malaysian cuisine served as well.

This caricacture sign of Madam Kwan’s is located just outside the restaurant. Well, such person really exist as we saw a video footage (inside the premise) of a lady resembling her preparing nasi lemak.

The decorations inside Madam Kwan’s looked neat and classy, giving you the impression it is a high end restaurant here. Plain water is complimentary but added with a strawberry (instead of lemon) to give some flavours.

Nasi Lemak, Madam Kwan’s signature dish. Typical nasi lemak that cost RM14.90++. The ingredients were sufficient though we did wish for more. Served with chicken curry, sambal ikan bilis, dried shrimp floss, hard boiled egg and acar (on a separate saucer)

The chicken curry was delicous and the gravy quite fragrant and flavourful. The chicken was a bit hard though.

The ikan bilis was towards sweet type and not spicy. Given the portion here, we did wish for more.

The chili sauce for curry laksa, which is like combination curry mee and lemak laksa.

The size of curry laksa bowl was rather big, similar to the one used in Laksa Shack and the soup looked fiery red like tomyam. But it was not spicy at all, which was the reason they included chili as well. One bowl cost RM12.90++

Average sized prawns were included in the curry laksa and the portion of ingredients quite satisfying. The gravy were quite thick and addictive. Though it was not spicy at first but could feel the spiciness down the throat after some time

The noodles used were the flat type, like the one we saw at Perak Road Hokkien Mee. The curry laksa here tasted better than Laksa Shack, given the ingredients and the flavour that was quite appetizing when we ate this curry laksa

Big sized tau pok (dried beancurd) were included as well. Noticed the amount of mint leaves used as well

New Zealand Grilled Lamb Chop at RM22.50++. You get five lamb cutlets coupled with large, long french fries, vegetables and one full tomato cut into halves (hidden)

Each lamb cutlet was consistent in sizes but there was some inconsistencies in the cooking as some cutlets were juicy and chewy while another was between “medium-well” and “well done” the the lamb chop was a bit hard.

The Rosemary sauce for this lamb chop was sweet but limited

Mint sauce was served as well and it was thick with no water added for dilution.

Nasi Bojari (RM21.50++). Sounds like “no finger rice” in hokkien..hehe. Combination of three coloured rice served with beef rendang, assam prawns and deep fried chicken drumstick. Tasted a bit like combination of nasi briyani and nasi kerabu.

Beef rendang was excellent, just like typical Malay cooking style. The beef was in slices and cooked until the meat was soft. The deep fried chicken was fried to perfection, crispy outside yet the flesh inside was still tender and juicy. The best thing about the fried chicken was it did not taste oily

Assams prawns was fragrant and nice but only 3 pieces.
The public response was quite good as the place was full house and we continuously saw people queueing up to dine. Service was commendable as the staffs were quite efficient in taking orders, delivering dishes and refilling water with each of them had specific task to focus on.

I dined in KLCC branch once, but not this.
If am not mistaken they have one outlet in Pavilion also.

It would be a bit hard for Madam Kwan to survive in Penang as there are many food courts, hawker centres at throwing distance, plus there are still many families who cook their own meals.
KL sings a different song compared to Penang. They have higher income, a lot of out-stationers working there, shopping malls command more traffic, etc.
The franchises I hope will come to Penang are Tony Roma’s, Carl’s Junior and Burger King. Tapanyaki is also not a bad idea.

A nice looking plate of nasi lemak. I still recall those days when most people go to Sakura on Imbi Road to have a plate.

Different demands due to supplies. I like Madam Kwan’s food serving because it is value for money. Shouldn’t compare to others.
