Penang Buffet | Rasa Sayang’s Spice Market Cafe
THIS IS A MULTI PAGE POST : 1 2
Dear Readers,
You must be wondering what had happened to PenangTuaPui after our slow down in updating posts for about a week. Truth be told, we are currently very tied up with projects at work and also personal commitments that require much attention. Our daily hours have already been used to the max that we really feel exhausted both physically and mentally. Our apologies for not updating as frequent and for not leaving a proper message to our readers.
In coming posts, we will adopt a slightly different approach of writing, editing and posting. We will use the summary format or picture format with captions in our postings so that we can continue to update the posting to our readers. This format allows us to spend some time in updating PenangTuaPui for our readers and also enable us to carry on working on our projects simultaneously. We seek your understanding and thoughtfulness as we adopt different styles of writing during this time and will revert to original, informative approach hopefully by end of this month. As a start, we will publish our post of Spice Market Cafe’s buffet dinner at Shangrila’s Rasa Sayang Hotel. Thank you for your understanding and we appreciate the support from you readers.
Spice Market Cafe’s buffet dinner is by far the most expensive buffet dinner in our buffet list from the restaurants. The price of RM132 per pax certainly draw a lot of attention that many people will consider a few times before making the decision to dine there. Certain credit cards will allow discounts up to 25% yet the bill will still exceed RM100 after including the tax and service charge. The question in mind is, does it worth to spend that amount to enjoy the buffet at Spice Market Cafe? Well, you can judge from yourself from the pictures below.
The sign outside the Spice Market Cafe.
The moment you enter Spice Market Cafe, nostalgic memories will set in by just observing the decorative items they put here like thermos flask, kettle etc.
The old weighing scale is also there.
Noticed the oil lamp in the picture? We used that during black out or going to backyard!
What our grandmothers used to roll or grind ingredients last time? The “batu giling” above.
The authentic method of making sambal. Now for decorative purpose only.
Do these container look familiar?
Over here they served Indian food like naan, rice, curry, dhall as well as satay and kebab
Choice of naan or rice with different types of curry
Masala, Mattar or dhall for indian food lovers
Selection of satay (lamb or chicken) and also tikka (marinated cutlet - fish of chicken)
Appetizer corner, cheese and salad
Varities of salad (nicoise, squid, fruits) and also tuna and salmon
Choose the type of cheese you prefer
Seafood thermidor, baked fish, chicken skewer and more
One big fish available at carving station. Look like baraccuda but don’t think it is. And it has sharp teeth too
The size of those scallops are bigger than the one at Tao, obviously
Lobster, Lobster! Yes, this is the smaller version
Oriental corner for diners who prefer bowl of hot soup
Not forgetting the sushi corner and the sashimi freshly cut upon request
The real fruits juice and fresh too, made on the spot

Great comprehensive write-up! I’m running out of buffet ideas in Penang too… this one’s a bit pricey but from the looks of the spread, well worth it! Would have to starve the day before though!
Although they have lots of variety, but I just a small/medium eater, will think twice before paying that amount of money.

er… RM135 is not really that expensive consider the many good food available. how small is the lobster? a lobster alone if taken at the restaurant cost over RM100! they don’t have oyster? (another expensive food - should have). the indian food also if take alone in restaurant will cost about RM30. there’s japanese food too which are not really cheap. so all in all, looking at RM135 i think, it’s not expensive BUT the problem is how much can our stomach fill? even though i’m a big eater, i can’t eat that much (everything there!) so i guess i wouldn’t want to pay RM135 for the buffet. RM100, ok.
Once in a while indulgence in these scallops and lobster or freshly cut sashimi plus with a big appetite for food will be worth it. These ” ang moh” and rich tourist won’t feel the pinch with their big bucks but not for us with our shrinking RM…:)

FYI, the juice corner is not included in the buffet price. You need to pay for it.
hi yin,
the juice corner was indeed part of the buffet as they were available in jugs after the staff made them and Tam Ciak also ordered a teapot of tea which was part of the buffet as well. We went on saturday’s buffet dinner btw
when i was there, they charged us RM15 for each fruit juice
hi laksa,
Seems like Spice Market Cafe have charged certain items that was part of buffet items before. We have dropped them an email to clarify and hopefully they will reply…
If this is really, the case. We’ll need to update this piece of important information…
My brother is getting married this year. Looking for a place to hold wedding party for his friends and colleague with buffet spread and alcohol, ie. going a bit wild after the meal….. There will be 60-80 guests, mostly young and middle age people. Any suggestion where is a good place to hold it? We like to do some floral deco on round tables, etc….
Tulipgirl,
That sounds like a big task for us! Is your brother getting married mid year or year end? Why don’t you drop us an email at penangtuapui@gmail.com and we’ll try to see what we can do at our end. Is that ok?
Is there any credit card promotion for the buffet and how much?
Can we have the contact number please? Thanks.
Saturday dinner buffet is the best right?
Hi Melvin,
There was a promotion for Standard Chartered and Citibank credit card some time ago but we’re not sure if it’s still available. You can call up Rasa Sayang at 04-888-8888 and ask for Spice Market Cafe to find out more.
Alternatively, you can look here for other great buffets:

Those round things you asked if we know what they are - They are weights of different sizes (weights). You put on piece on one side of the balance, and put the thing you want to weigh on the other side. They are kept in the weight box shown in the picture.
BigEater,
Thanks for pointing that out. We thought the weights are actually put on the scale itself.. The one that has shapes like Pacman……Now we know what these things are. Thanks~!
