In my maiden food post in this very blog, let me suggest a hidden treasure of seafood in Penang. If you are not one of the “slaves” of the Free Industrial Zone in Bayan Lepas, chances are that you might not even heard of the place called Teluk Tempoyak, near Batu Maung.
This edition of food post, desmond-t will bring to you an upclose and personal review of what he regards as CHEAP, VARIETY, COZY and TANTALIZING seafood in a Malay style delicacy. It’s Raya Festivities, of course we shall indulge in this special cuisine.
Getting there? Hmm, pretty easy. Every Penangite should be able to get to the FIZ, for sure right? (unless u’re one of the lost cavemen, you don’t deserve to enjoy this then) At the Batu Maung War Museum and fishless Aquarium intersection, you can spot a huge signboard leading to Teluk Tempoyak.
Once again, discounting for any blunder of you being so blind to miss the signboard, the journey should be pretty straight forward. There is no “road not taken” options anymore, just follow wherever the road leads you.
There are two seafood stalls there. Erm, I sincerely do not regard them as stalls, instead restaurants. They are pretty spacious indeed. Of the two restaurants, I went to the inner one, just beside the seashore.
Clad in vests, uniformed and soft-spoken, do you still regard them as “warung” by the road side? Hmm… ada standard ok… Kasi sikit respect, don’t play play ah!
As you can see, there’s such a wide range of seafood, you can choose for yourself and request them to prepare the dish as per your liking. Thumbs up for the freshness.
Ambience? Cool, as it is located in a Malay fishing village, it has a pretty serene surrounding. Perfect sea breeze would definitely blow you way mesmerizing the charming shore. But if it’s a low tide season, you better stuck up your nostrils as it’s gonna stink with the smelly mud sea breeze…
Satay for appetizer isn’t really ideal, that’s for my case. First, the stuffy meat tend to fill up your capacity unless your freaking hungry cos you got lost while on your way up here! Besides, the satay is “modernized” already since they are grilling it on a gas stove. This is kinda weird way of cooking, at least that’s what I felt.
Ok, ok…. OKAY! I’ll let pictures do the talking from here onwards. Stuff you with gluttony, make you drool and hungry rightaway! Bon Appetite!
Crabs - Cooked with their “Special Sauce”, shiny and yummy!
Deep Fried Sotong - Same la, typical one, you can bet it tastes the same everywhere.
Vege: Kai Lan Char Chiap, LOL Believe me or not, even the Malays can recognize Hokkien dishes’ name.
Typical Cockles or Kerang Bakar.
Sotong Masak Cabai/ Cili - Tastes equally good and recommended!
A must try in Teluk Tempoyak is Ikan Bakar.
You can just tell them which fish to bakar and how do you wish to “bakar” it. Thumbs and toes up!
…and that sums it all for this edition of food review.

hmm, quite a cosy place to dine ya! Must give a try since desmond-t highly recommended. Coz so far for seafood, only tried Malay styled ikan bakar.
SimpleGirls last blog post..My birthday
SimpleGirl,
the dishes were truly malay styled. But most of all, it’s the environment that’s really comfortable..
hmmm…. Malays eat Crab too??? i thought they do not…. hmmm…..strange…..
Leng Lui,
Maybe they don’t eat crabs but it’s meant for non-malay customers instead?
Just a guess
Been to this place few years back. I think it’s time to revisit them again. lol We would like to wish all the PTP, “Merry Christmas”.

allie,
it tasted good too… they put the chili inside the sotong instead of outside… something different to try
My last trip there was in 1997.
Taken to this hidden treasure up the hill and down the dale by my Malay friends. Wow! a fantastic discovery.
At that time, I was the only Chinese guy around. Frightening? Not to worry, my friends assured me… hahaha
Try out the ikan bakar and udang bakar!
Great and cheap, I could assure you.
Today, the poor economy might make it cheaper?…hahaha
Yes, yes PTP, Let’s welcome desmond-t, clappppppp….!
I was on the verge of mentioning this Teluk Tempoyak hideout to PTP when desmond-t made this as his “maiden” or “teruna?” debut…lol, Great!
Welcome desmond-t! Your write-up and pix are very informative.

Used to go there quite frequently. But, my last visit was years ago. (In fact, opted Ismail Ikan Bakar opposite Seagate, b’oz of the distance).
Through the photos, the place looks been through a major renovation. May find a time to revisit the place.
Very seldom taking dinner at the Island ever since I moved to mainland.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.
Cheers!

[...] I’m flattered to have been their Guest Contributor of their recent blogpost regarding the Penang Seafood at Teluk Tempoyak. Hmm, it’s an honour to have been blogging with such a great food blog site like theirs. [...]
Jian,
We didn’t encounter that incident during our dinner that. The food is purely typical Malay dishes but the ikan bakar part is worth trying…
How is this one compared to the Hammer Bay Ikan Bakar (price and tastyness)? Talking about this, I still wish that Penang TuaPui can give rating to the places visited.
Abc,
the one at Hammer Bay still beat this one and we still like the environment there and also the food.
In term of taste, Hammer Bay is much better in overall where as Teluk Tempoyak is pretty good in the ikan bakar portion. The other dishes just just typical malay dishes, no surprises there. As for the price, Hammer Bay is slightly above but not much the difference we could notice…
your input is taken and we’ll try to incorporate that in the future. thanks
