Penang Food | Ah Keat Seafood - Jalan Raja Uda

THIS IS A MULTI PAGE POST : 1 2

Another seafood session! Hahaha yes, seems like we have been having seafood meals lately, to commemorate some occasions again? Well, our meal this round brought us back to Butterworth but not the seafood town (aka Tambun) or the 323 Seafood which we had some time ago.

Jalan Raja Uda is a long stretch of road at Butterworth that has food almost at every corner from the beginning starting from seafood curry mee at one end all the way to fish steamboat and the beautiful Nine Jade Emperor Temple at the other end.

Ah Keat Seafood is slightly opposite the Nine Jade Emperor temple and located at the first turn on the right if you are traveling from the Sungai Dua using the Butterworth Outer Ring Road.

This seafood restaurant has gone through extensive renovations that it is much larger and more spacious with good lighting and orderly tables arrangement compared to last time.

The left side of the restaurant can now house a lot of live seafood both local and imported one such as oyster, lobster, crab, clams, fish.

We were there quite early with only few tables occupied and had our orders taken immediately after we settled down. Even after we had finished our meals, the place was not full occupied like it used to. Perhaps, this was just another sign of people tightening their wallet to eat home or choose less expensive meals.

Fried bee hoon with salted fish was first to arrive, well that should be the easiest to prepare right? The portion was sufficient for six of us as starter while waiting for other dishes to arrive. The fried bee hoon was not that salty compared to regular bee hoon as salted fish was used to complement it the saltiness taste.

Sambal potato leaves came next but the portion looked smaller for its serving plate. It could barely fill up three quarters of the plate only. Well, even though the serving plate used was bigger relatively, the portion was smaller than we thought for six adults. This is another variation of sambal kangkung dish.

Taste wise, the spiciness was not that great but rather mild only but it tasted good enough for Tam Ciak compared to the spicy hot pot we had at Restoran Toipark Village.

Kerabu Mango was another appetizer we ordered while waiting for the heavy ones. This kerabu mango was not too sweet nor too sour, which the mango used was probably about to ripe and not the young ones. We liked the crunchiness because the mango texture was still firm plus with the shrimps and nuts included. The cili padi just made this kerabu mango more interesting.

    gill gill,

perhaps it’s easier to see their shape and size this way compared to when the geoduck was put flat on the surface?

    NKOTB,

We didn’t notice that actually. Next to the shop means outside the premise or inside the premise?

Hmm i don’t think they’re going to “consume” the White Snakes.. hopefully…

read this blog in forwarded email form, went to try with my friend last month. Conclusion: Worst ever dining experience!
    highlights:-
    1. the place is always FULL with customer from opening to closing. You know why? Because everybody has to wait MINIMUM 30mins from order to dish serving. My encounter, waited 50mins before first dish is served!
    2. losing my patient, i went to counter to pay my drinks and plan to split. Cashier refused and the cook looked at me like “WTF”
    3. Cook tag-line “we cook what, you eat what, WTF”. Story line: my friend ordered “Kam Heong (cantonese) bamboo clamp”, but the one served looks wet and no curry at all. I asked the waiter “what is this?”. “sweet and sour bamboo clamp!” she replied. Then i asked “What did we order?”. “Kam Heong bamboo clamp!” she replied without any hesitation. “Well, our cook may be want to cook all the same (meaning dont want to wash the wok so many times), sooo…” the waiter add on and looking at me as if i need to take it or leave it, WTF! I tell her “I CANNOT ACCEPT THIS!”. So, she took it back to the cook. After 5mins, she came back with the same plate of “thing”, just re-wok again with some chillies and still wet like “sweet and sour!” WTFFFFFFF!
    4. 2 crabs fried with salted egg yolk, 2 steamed mantis prawn, 1 plate of so called “Kam Heong + sweet & sour” bamboo clamp cost us RM130!

Well, if you can wait, dont mind what being served and dont mind pay more, why NOT!

Went there last night. Among the dishes we ordered was the Tom Yam Seafood Soup. It was neither spicy nor sour enough. In fact it was sweet to our taste. The prawns in it looked like they had been stewed for ages (they were wearing shells which were two sizes too big, like the ones you find at the bottom of a steamboat) and were totally tasteless.

Steamed La-La with lemon juices were overcooked.

Fried Baby French Beans were tasteless.

Thai-style Fried Mantis Prawns were more batter than prawns. All you got was the crunch with minuscule amounts of prawn meat within.

We ordered 3 crabs to be fried Chilli and Sour style. The dish turned up at our table with 5 crabs in it. Instead of offering us an apology, which we would have happily accepted and paid for the five crabs, the staff did the unthinkable, which was to take the dish back to the kitchen to have 2 crabs removed. When it came back, there were 2 crab claws missing, so they had removed a bit more than 2 crabs. We told them to remove the dish and refused to pay for it.
I pity the diners who got to eat the 2 crabs they removed from our dish, thinking they had been freshly prepared.

Come to think of it, those Tom Yam Prawns had probably come from someone else’s leftovers…

You could not pay me enough money to make me go back to Ah Keat Seafood.
    Total disappointment!
