Hawker Food | Cintra Street Chicken Porridge
Allie’s adventure this round brought her to chicken poridge at Cintra Street. Despite the good recommendation from her friend to eat here, she is having second thought about coming back due to the owner’s attitude… Let her tell her story. Original article is here.
By Allie
We are out to hunt for chicken porridge which is recommended by a friend of us. The first thing we did is order the porridge when we reach as we are very hungry and neglecting to see the stall is yet to open for business.
The owner answer us in a ‘not so good‘ manner that the porridge is not ready yet.
But I am so lucky that the famous curry ccf is still open. The porridge stall is just next to the ccf stall. I thought the stall only operate from noon till evening. When we place the order, the stall owner told us that the chicken is finish, only left potato. As our stomach is crying for food and I’ve been wanting to taste this curry chee cheong fun, we order it still.
Even without the chicken, the curry ccf taste good. But if more curry is served, then it’d be better. Hehe…
Even though the chicken had finished, on and off there are customers buying the ccf still.
Even after we finished our chee cheong fun, seems like there’s not any sign of opening of the porridge stall. We heard the owner told one customer that, when the light is on, then only the stall is open for business. When it’s about 8.30pm, the light is on.
Without any delay, we order 2 bowls of chicken porridge. We added fish fillet into our porridge. The porridge texture is not as smooth as the one I ate in HK. But the taste is good.
There are some fresh lettuce, yau char kuai, shredded ginger in the porridge. A hint of sesame oil in the porridge - the way I always like my porridge to taste like.
Chunks of chicken and fish fillet can be found in the porridge.
Overall the porridge taste good but the owner’s manner is not so good. Even when she served us the porridge, we do not feel any kindness in it. :-p
p/s: We saw that some customer order a plate of chicken separately. I would like to try this on my next visit. But need to consider for revisit or not due to the unkindness of the owner.

Indeed, they are pretty rude in the sense. After seeing them use plastic mug to poured hot boiling water into the pot, we would merely consider to take the porridge anymore.

gill gill…
using plastic mug to pour the hot water into the pot?
which type of plastic mug are we talking about?
Ooh, shame about the attitude! Can’t understand why they think they can get away disrespecting customers just because they serve above average food. There are plenty of other choices in Penang… I’ll pass thanks!

550ml jar of faith,
at least now you know which chicken porridge stall to avoid
I visited the stall again weeks ago cos I’m bringing a friend of mine there. We ordered half chicken and it’s so expensive. But it taste good, the chicken is very smooth. If not mistaken it cost us around RM25 for the chicken only.

cutie,
you can plan your visit to penang one day
lettuce in a porridge is just like garnishing… taste quite good too
New Kid on the Blog,
this is what we’ve been doing all this while towards hawker foods…
despite the bad attitude of these owners, somehow we’ll still go back to the place again and again….
well, we don’t have to highlight them here but we’re sure you know which ones we could be referring…
The world has changed. During the good old days, some fifty years ago hawkers could be scolded at every corner according to customers’ moods. Below were some common complaints to share:
“Boh yew cha-ang an chuah chiah?”
(No fried shallots howcould I to eat?)
“Oo yew cha-ang an chuah chiah?”
(Fried shallots there, how could I eat?)
“Boh taugeh mana aeh chiah?”
(No beansprouts how could I eat?)
“Oo taugeh mana aeh chiah?”
(Beansprouts there, how could I eat?)
“Aun neh cheh huan chio an chuah chiah?”
(So much chillies how could I eat?)
“Boh huan chio an chuah chiah?”
(No chillies, how could I eat?)
It was hard life then!
Beh Mee si siang Beh Miah!
(Selling Mee is like selling Life!)
Today, many hawkers behave as if they are our tuan. This ketuanan penjaja happens everywhere.
Yet, their businesses flourish despite the bad manners. When one orders, they would not even throw a glance. Are they too busy or too proud?
Okay, given that the hawkers were untrained in PR because they were peddlars. But, look at the complaints below at PTP blog on the Fourseasons Tea Restuarant, Sunway Tunas:

The business is as good as ever! Say what you want! They could not be bothered! The boss himself is helluva rude!
all the mis-behave of the hawker is the results of we… Penang folks and visitor .. pampering them, shall we gain back our rights?

Yes, we can try to gain back our rights at the next election…hahahaha
Penang Tionghua,
it’s something that the users need to take charge even though others may not follow.
The best thing we can do is knowing the manners of these hawkers or restaurants below expectations, we have a choice of not to go there…
PTP
Agreed. One needs not go once the restaurants’ or hawkers’ stances are known.
Therefore, my comments are for a general awareness to check it out; and not expecting others to follow to the word. Certainly, these rude traits may not be visible for a single table order and non-occasion.
Customer support from the operators is very important when one organises the many table-meal *frequently* for a business occasion.
Bad behaviour not only have an impact on the restauranteurs themselves, but also severe bad taste on their customers’ relationship with their clients. It puts the organisers out of countenance.
Having said so much, true one is impotent if they refuse to hearken to anything.
If their businesses continue to flourish despite the bad behaviour, it is definitely not good management or business practices but the doings of upstairs in their stars.

I agree. Good food with good service manner is a must. At least a basic respond to any enquiry. I’m totally annoyed by the owner’s bad service manner. Undoubtedly, porridge is good, I will hesitate to think twice to recommend friennds to go there.

cintra st chicken poridge really true, the porridge is good, but the owner like wat aslo i dont know how to talk. like we r owing the owner a lot of money. CANNOT SMILE AT ALL…..
the porridge kinda weird eh ? with lettuce? and chicken + fish ?
the lady is very rude. more over the price is so expensive. if you take the chicken separately, will cost you around rm10 per plate.
You’re not the only people who got mad service from the owner of this stall. My family stopped going there because the fat auntie is rude to us every single time.. so arrogant
I feel terribly TL when I made my order. The owner was super lansi until I decided not to write out. Undoubtedly the chicken porridge is tasty. Overall, with this kind of attitude, like what Allie described - even delivered the product also unkind manner… how far the food quality and taste able to stay longer. I directly made decision not to write this stall. Banned!
Well, I nearly show my finger in front of that aunty to boycott her.
