Penang Food | Wong Chau Jun – Fish Head Beehoon
For those who had never been here, the bright yellow signboard could be easily mistaken as the place serving vegetarian food but once you stepped into this place, you would know it was not a vegetarian place but rather a famous spot for fish head bee hoon.
Wong Chau Jun is located along Rangoon Road just some distance away from SeangLim Toptaste Hokkien Mee. It might be easy to miss this place as most of the shop houses here looked almost the same so the only indication you have to reach this place is the bright yellow signboard.
The restaurant itself was quite spacious and brightly lit. The ventilation around the place was quite good and not stuffy at all due to the high ceiling and few high powered fans that kept blowing. There were ample seats available even though the restaurant was full of customers.
Fish head bee hoon was the first dish arrived and it came it big claypot that could serve a few people at once, unlike the one at we had at Sungai Ara. It looked a bit like big bowl of porridge when the fish head beehoon was served to us. The ingredients were quite adequate with pieces of fishes in every scoop we took.
The soup was clear in colour and tasted sour and spicy like the Thai style. The combination of sourness and spiciness in the fish head bee hoon was addicting that Tam Ciak kept scooping one spoon after another. Fei Fei said he liked this one too but Huat Koay and Tau Hua preferred the one at Sungai Ara.
The other attraction was steamed fish with hor fun which was a unique dish available in Penang in terms of the cooking style. The dish looked pretty simple with slices of fish steamed and then added with hor fun before being served. The steamed fish with hor fun was quite nice and special with the sauce act as the seasoning to the dish as the hor fun and steamed fish were bland and almost tasteless. Still, we could taste the freshness of the steamed fish which was tasty and the smooth hor fun was just the perfect companion that came together.
A good place for lunch if you do not mind traveling here but parking can be a problem here. Sometimes you need to park at the other street and walk over to this place but lady luck is at your side if you can find parking spots just outside this restaurant. Waiting is low as well and you would get your dish normally quite fast too. No long hour waiting like the Sungai Ara one!

Guys, thanks for korek-ing this place out. I had lunch there today and it was delicious! My parents loved it. Erm….but is it really fish head bee hoon? I have lots of pieces of fish in there but I don’t think they are fish head lah….
[...] big thank you to the good folks of Penang Tua Pui for korek-ing this place [...]
Sheryl,
glad you have tried this place yourself and that your parents loved them too… perhaps it was not fish head bee hoon.. there’s always a choice to use only fish meat instead…

This shud be a MUST visit outlet at Penang and their quality remain even they are famous.
I have been to WongChauJuin for years (4years at least) and love the steamed fish hor fun and sour spicy beehoon. Have been bringing lots of outstation friends to this kopitiam!
