Penang Food | SeangLim TopTaste Hokkien Mee

16 November 2008 585 views 11 Comments

This hokkien mee stall was rather interesting or eye catching because of the big prawn hanging on top of the stall and we can say this stall is the most decorative Hokkien Mee stall so far that we had seen with the giant prawn and some Christmas bulbs on the stall.

The other decoration we referred to was on the recommendation awards given to this stall especially from 8TV’s Ho Ciak, Singapore Channel U’s Yummy King and also featured in local dailies.

Penang Seang Lim TopTaste Hokkien Mee is located inside Sim Kin San Coffee shop at the junction of Macalister Road and Rangoon Road. The coffee shop has bright yellow signboard which can be easily recognized.

The specialty of the hokkien mee here is that they add prawn mantis into the hokkien mee, thus making the hokkien mee different from others like the one in Classic Hokkien Mee or Ah How Hokkien Mee. Prawn mantises are normally found in the Char Koay Teow like Ah Leng’s Char Koay Teow.

The soup is a bit oily and the taste was did not have strong prawn flavours. Maybe we were too early to arrive especially when they had just started business not too long ago. Besides the hokkien mee we did also order some dim sum snacks to compliment our hokkien mee breakfast and the porridge was quite delicious even though it was a bit salty. A simple breakfast that time to start our weekend food hunt.

i had try this hokkien mee stall many times as the coffee shop is one of the regular ones i used to patronise (thus also try many other food there). beside san kim san, there are 2 other coffee shops, just next to each other (the last one has nice hong kong chee cheong fun).

i have heard from people what janice said - that it used to be better years ago. now, not so nice… but well, to me it is still nice.

    janice, lucia,

so far the hokkien mee is still acceptable to us except the soup was less flavour compared to the ones in Perak road or Bawasah road one. Again, we’re not sure how long was the comparison made and it could be much more delicious last time compared to now…

but we did remember someone mentioned before that the standard of hawker foods drop compared to last time… maybe this is one of the case? again, this is based on individual perceptions but you could be right :-)

I just boycott and stopped eating at this stall.

From Rm 3.70 to Rm 4.50 and now Rm 5 for no reason.

I prefer to go opposite stall now for Hokkien Mee + Roasted Pork.
