Penang Food | One Corner Cafe Hokkien Mee

Why do people ever feel so willing to wait a long time just to taste over a bowl of Hokkien Mee? Well, there must be something exceptionally good with the Hokkien Mee that people would want to wait long enough for their turn or if they prefer, call up as early as possible with some even the day before just to order Hokkien Mee.

We had the experience of waiting nearly an hour for our Hokkien Mee at the Classic Hokkien Mee at Perak Road and now we repeating the same history of waiting except this time we were at the Bawasah Road’s One Corner Café Hokkien Mee. Yes, the bright yellow signboard with red wordings. This was the place that sold the Indian Laksa that we talked about some time ago as well.

We went there quite early around 7 in the morning yet was told had to wait for ah hour despite the fact that there were less than 10 tables occupied in the coffee shop that time. Only gradually, we realized that most of the orders were made upfront through phone calls and they were actually preparing to take away orders with each order had about 15 – 20 packets. Wow!

The process flow up to delivering the Hokkien Mee seemed systematic with four persons working each time. It was like watching a Hokkien Mee production line in action. There will be one person to cook the noodles and ingredients before passing to the next person to pour the soup onto the ingredients. The third person was involved in the packing process while the last person in charge of only taking orders. All the orders were written on a book for easier tracking.

The Hokkien Mee here used the same noodles as the one in Classic Hokkien Mee and Huat Koay felt the soup was much spicier too. Remember to taste your soup first for spiciness before you decice to add more chili. The soup has strong prawn based flavour and quite oily. If you want less oil, remember to tell to the own that jot down your orders.

Do look for a nice spot to sit and relax while taking the newspaper with you to pass the time waiting for your turn. You must be free enough to be waiting here to enjoy yet another famous Hokkien Mee.

after trying out this stall…. my family decided they are not going to wait so long just for a bowl of hokkien mee! lol
its a bit too oily and spicy for my liking though. so i guess i’m sticking to the pulau tikus ‘balai’ one.. which is also just as packed. but so far the waiting time has never been quite as long as the stall here. :)

Well, I have given up hope long time ago to buy from them anymore, not because of the taste but the waiting time. I would still go back to my regular one at Pulau Tikus’s Sin Kang Cafe as Lingzie mentioned. One problem here is that they would have sold out by 9am.

Generally, PG hokkien mee is all ok but I really find this SUPER shop worth for $ and the taste is yummie. The “liau” they put in the mee is so much. If lucky, you get to add the pork ribs too. But it’s the wait that put me off too. So what I do is order first, go do other stuff like walking in park, then come back to eat. In this way, you only wait 5mins. I who can tahan hot food also finds the soup a bit spicy so I don’t add the chili anymore.
