Hawker Food | Roti Canai - Transfer Road

PenangTuaPui’s Guest Contributor, Allie went to the have breakfast at one of Penang’s famous roti canai stall and this is her experience. Original article can be found here.

By Allie

I believe this is a very common place for most Penangites. A very famous place to have roti canai as breakfast. It’s located near the old main police station along Transfer road.

The stall and the dining tables are stretch along a few buildings just by the road side. Lots of people eat here, so you have to wait patiently for your roti canai to be served.

While waiting for my roti canai, I’ve order 2 half boiled egg and roti bakar as my ‘appetizer’. This roti bakar stall is just located next to the roti canai stall and the owner will walk around to take order from the roti canai customer.

My favourite - half boiled egg with some pepper and soy sauce.

Roti bakar with some butter and kaya. I still prefer mine with butter and lots of sugar sprinkle on top (the one at Sg. Tiram of course)

The roti bakar is prepared in a way as what you’d do with satay.

You can also opt for your half boiled egg to be served on top of your roti bakar.

After waited for quite sometimes, finally my main course arrived. Roti canai served with chicken curry and lamb curry. The roti canai is slightly crispy.

Lamb curry is very spicy while the lamb meat is very tender. The best part is without any ‘lamb smell’.

Curry chicken which tasted not as spicy as the lamb curry. I noticed that the curry chicken is mixed with dal curry. To me, this one tasted not as good as the lamb curry but still it’s not bad.

This place is not suitable for those who are very hygiene conscious as this was served at road side. And you may notice that they used to stack one place on another when they serve you the roti canai. Hmm… but I just close one eye, not to think too much about hygienic at that moment. Hehe

The roti canai and the curry is not bad but not sure you guys heard of one very unfortunate story about the way they prepares the roti canai. :)

I better don’t tell over here. :) But no matters what, I still frequent this stall as I fancy such place for foods instead of restaurants. My stomach has already used to it. :)

no offense, i just want to correct your english. your blog post is nice and informative. just corrent your english abit. hope u dont mind

“hygienic concern” should be “hygiene conscious”

“not to think too much about hygienic at that moment” should be “not to think too much about hygiene” or “not to think too much about BEING hygienic”

    samyeap,

most of us have the idea (roughly) how these roti canai(s) are made but either we’re being ignorant or the taste is too good that we don’t mind.

Like what allie said above, hygiene is not a factor to consider if you choose eating at this place. So.. bon appetit~! :)

I’ve heard so much abt this place but never had the chance to visit it, until earlier this week.

    My humble verdict :
    - the mutton curry is *super* spicy. I hate dhal on my roti canai and will usually request for curry minus the dhal. This place actually mixes the curry (be it chicken or mutton) with dhal and strangely, it tastes mighty fine! :D

    - the roti is nothing to shout about. I was sitting at the long table closest to the big pan and watched them prepare the roti. Very hastily done, thus not stretching the dough enough. Consequently, not crispy enough. The ghee they used is not that great either which resulted in the roti lacking fragrance.

    - the environment is erm….rather…unhygienic. I observed all the Indian dudes who prepared and served the food. Bare hands touching food, touching head, touching everywhere. As a born and bred Penangite, I am able to stomach the scene and the food (to quote PTP, “dirty eat, dirty big” which is the literal translation from a popular Hokkien term) but let’s just say that I would NEVER take an out-of-town or foreigner friend to this place. They would flip over and swear off roti canai in Penang! *ROTFL*

Lastly, to correct some of the comments above, this place is not a mamak stall, but an Indian stall. So strictly NO BEEF. Just chicken or mutton curry is available. I have to admit the mutton curry is kick-ass! :)

We miss you here! Hehehe :D

Yes, agree the mutton is something to brag about while the environment is something not for the faint hearted or hygiene conscious people. It’s never for foreigners but mostly locals … maybe that’s what makes us special..able to take these food :D

    Nice to see you back~!

Kalau nak sempoi ambik roti canai sekali dgn dhal campur dgn kari daging sekali.marveles beb. kadang2 tak sempat makan sampai habis sbb polis trafic datang nak saman sapa2 park motor tepi jalanraya so apa lagi tinggai sat roti atas meja,pi ubah motor dulu yg penting nanti kena saman pulak..mmg kalut skit waktu tu.Satu lagi kalau duduk kat meja panjang, baik duduk kat tepi sekali sbb nanti nak kluaq senang skit tak payah nak suruh org bangun sekali.
