Penang Restaurant | Salsas Restaurant

Huat Koay is quite a famous person everywhere he goes and we are sure most of you will agree. His comical yet sarcastic approach at times make you feel as if you want to bang his head but at the same time, with his presence around, the whole place seems to become livelier and fun. Those of you who had attended the 1st and 2nd Penang food bloggers gathering will surely nod you head in approval… hehehe

It was no surprise that his birthday which just over few days ago, had string of birthday celebrations that it was not a birthday day but rather it was a birthday week! Yup, people are lining up to book his calendar so that they can celebrate his birthday. Quite a celebrity, do you not agree?

The celebration at Salsas Restaurant was the 2nd for the week while the 3rd one was at KissA Koyotei. Oh wait, where was the 1st one? Well, the first one was quite amusing and a “good” experience. We shall not let the cat out of the bag yet until that article being posted… Hehehe, suspensed? Then click here.

The Salsas Restaurant is located at the corner lot at the beginning of Penang Road, which is just opposite Sega Fredo. There are two dining areas at Salsas, one of which requires you take a small staircase down. Either dining area offers great view to the outside and quite cozy too.

There was something interesting that we noticed on the table. A device was put on every table that can be used to page the waiters/waitresses. There were three buttons available Call, Bill & Water. Just press the corresponding button and they would come with the appropriate stuffs.

The menu was simple that showcase most of the set lunches available at that time, which range from RM13.50++, RM15.50++ and RM18.50++ that include a choice of either salad or soup as appetizer, main dish, dessert and a choice of either coffee, tea or fruits juice.

The soup and salad came as soon as we were done ordering and there were also complimentary buns for each of us. Quite decent portion for salad and the same went for the soup.

The set lunches were catered for office people around this region and the preparation time had got to be fast. Else, people would start complaining for have their lunches served. Our orders came quite within reasonable amount of waiting time.

Grilled breast of Chicken stuffed with prawns, Grilled fillet of Sole fish and Grilled leg of Lamb came almost at the same time. The first impression was the plates were rather big with adequate servings. Ratio wise, the portion of main dish could be much smaller but because they were mostly meat, it could be quite filling after you had finished the whole plate.

The grilled chicken was served with mash potatoes and some vegetables that made the dish quite colourful. The chicken was well grilled and poured with a sauce that was made of some herbs although we could not really identify the herbs.

The grilled fish was a bit dry at the outside but luckily the flesh inside still juicy. The fish portion was quite generous as well. There was an orange colour item that came together with the fish but we could not make up what that thing was. All we could tell was it tasted salty and a bit sour.

Grilled lamb was served with ratatouille and mash potatoes and the grilled lamb was cooked towards medium well as we could feel the lamb was still bouncy with middle portion slight reddish. Also, the grilled lamb did not have a strong lamb smell even when we were chewing it. This would be good for those who liked lamb but did not want the strong lamb smell.

The dessert was cheese cake with vanilla flavoured ice cream and poured with some syrup. The cheese cake was quite creamy and delicious. Quite moist and fragrant too.

This was the 2nd celebration for Huat Koay and stay tuned a few more.

I went there long time ago (before started blogging) for a promotional set course dinner. It was delicious. Service was good too. The only thing is that it’s a little hard to find parking around there.

This is a firm favourite of mine too - so affordable, so fast, real simple food, nothing too fussy. I sometimes think the portions are too small though (when I’m REALLY hungry, whihc is quite often). I like the fact that you get to choose soup or salad. But their menus are up for a revamp - they’ve been serving the same items for ages!

These days, no worry about the parking already, there are few car parks area further down the road, one just next to Muntri Street/Penang Road junction while another one is behind the Red Garden Cafe (slightly opposite Cititel)

Too bad for the bad experience you encountered last time. Luckily for us, the dining experience was good.. maybe it was Huat Koay’s birthday that they make it extra special for him? hehehehe

    Albert Yap
Wow, three times strike? Hmm… We would have banned that one long time ago… But then we did not encounter that, maybe you want to tell a story how bad they all went? .. just some sharing perhaps..

When they were at Kelawai Road, Gill’s family went there and complaint about the food and service. Thus, till now I have not had any urge to try out their new outlet in Upper Penang Road.

Hope they have changed by then… if not, too bad for this restaurant for not knowing how to capture customers’s attention. They’ll be doing many on time sales…

Wow, the price is quite reasonable for lunch. Any idea for the dinner? Have heard of this place long ago but never try. The style of food is similar to eighteen at Krystal point but i think it will taste better (coz i have bad experience at eighteen). Will mark it in my list…

Kindly a bad place/experience that we had last night after whole day working… A group of 8 peoples heading to Salsa, Penang to have our birthday dinner 1 of my kolik… There is not much choice… there have Baby Cod Fish, Grilled Thigh Chicken and grilled leg lamb… 5 of ladies are ordered leg lamb and 3 guys are preferring chicken… it is quite disappointed for us. 1st plate is our Appetizer/Salad… they come with 1 thin sliced smoked salmon and 1 no of arasgusta and with some vegetables. Later that, they pour us a bowl of soup… we have no idea what kind of that soup… tasted like corn but not like corn, like pumpkin, also not exactly the same… look around at my other kolik faces… they shows 1 kind of quite funny faces… at last, 1 of my kolik suggest try to add a bit if butter inside… we tried.. And the taste got slightly a little bit changes… but we still unable to finished the bowl of “weird” soup… After the soup, we are waiting for our main course… waiting n waiting… At last it came… once we saw the portion of the course…. all of us have 1 kind of reaction… “What? Why the plate much much bigger than portion?”… Main course for guys is came 1st… World is upside down… Gentlemen first… they still able to counting slices of the chicken (5 small pieces)also with half half baby corn, and 2 sticks of “unknown” veggie… but the chicken is tasted yummy… then here come our ladies main course.. haiz… it going to cry already.. We had 5 pieces of lamb, together with mashed potato, several cubes of pumpkin, 1 sliced of egg plant and also 1 sliced of cucumber.. But mostly we only picked the lamb instead of veggie… Tasted of the lamb… errmm… excellent… Tasted good but not enough for us… 1 of my kolik said, “why the lousy food portion is larger than yummy food?”.. We all laugh there… then lastly, here come our desert… another time of disappointed… as mentioned, the plate is bigger (much) than the desert… we served with 1 small scoop of vanilla ice cream, 1 small piece of banana cake and also 1 small piece of cheesecake… the size of the cake.. haiz… 1 mouth can finish it… Now we talk about the service… we had a bad experience of it..

The place look high class but the service just likes “suXk”… They are so rude… we as customer… We pay for the service and the food… they don’t even use a properly polite English to serve us… So loud… When want to collect plate from us, they just said, “excuse me, give me the plate!”.. What the hell….. they don’t even use a polite way… guess… this time is the 1st time and also will be last time for us to having dinner at salsa, Penang…
