Penang Food | Malay Ikan Bakar - Hammer Bay

The thought of going home on Friday after work can be stressing especially if you are a frequent user of Penang Bridge. It was either you had to get home early or you could leave for home late. Of course, given a choice you would not want to stay too late at the office neither. So we made the decision to go seaside near Queensbay Mall to have our dinner. The other alternative we had in mind was “3N” Ikan Bakar near Tesco.

This place is quite near to Queensbay Mall and yet many people will actually miss that probably because their destination is QBM. Hammer Bay Ikan Bakar Special is located just next to the Gold Coast Condominium and if you are coming from Sungai Nibong, take a 12 o’clock turn.

It is just a short stretch before you reach the main entrance of the Malay Restaurant. Do not be fooled by its size or outlook. If you happen to come later at night, you can see there are tour buses actually bringing customers to this place. In fact, this place is quite lively at night.

The seating here is open air type with natural sea breeze blowing towards you while dining here. You can choose whether to have shaded seats or non covered ones. We noticed there were some dining places that resemble small huts.

There are in fact two stalls here but the one outside is more famous (obviously). The other one, Seri Pantai Ikan Bakar is situated deeper inside. Seats are normally more than enough even with the crowd gets larger.

The cockles came first as our appetizer and Huat Koay liked it very much and commented the cockles being quite fresh and juicy. He ate most of the cockles we had that night.. Haha

Sotong Goreng (Fried Squid) arrived next and the portion was much smaller than we thought. Still, it was crunchy and nice chewing these fried squid especially. The chili sauce tasted a bit like the Thai Chili sauce and quite tasty to dip the squid into them. Too bad, we ran out of fried squid very fast…. Arrghhhh.

Telur Dadar (Omelet) looked like fried beancurd stick that was soaked with water. The omelet was slight over fried at the middle as you can see from the burnt mark there. The omelet was just so-so, nothing special about it.

If the fried squid portion was little to us, the lala portion would be the opposite. It looked like a small hill when the lala was served to us but got to bear in mind not everything was edible. The lala came with the shells so by the time you removed the shells, it would not look like a small hill anymore. Still we were quite satisfied with the amount of lala we ate.

The final dish was the one we had been waiting for and this was also the name of the restaurant too. The ikan bakar came wrapped with banana leaves and when we opened the leaves exposing the fish, the smell of ikan bakar immediately became quite distinct. The fish was also covered with the chili paste that the whole fish looked quite red and flaming hot. Luckily for us, taste wise it was not too spicy but rather delicious.

Even though the fish was grilled with the banana leaves but the moisture of the fish was well retained. We did not taste the burnt portion of the ikan bakar at all. It was as if the fish was cooked upfront and then grilled but this was not the case. This was something we found quite pleased and contented.

You need confirm upfront the price of fish you ordered as it was based on market price. The rest of the dishes cost around RM6 to RM10 per dish. A word of caution though, the waitress will suggest that you order leng chee kang but that would cost you RM9 per jug. Considering the ingredients we had for the leng chee kang, it was quite expensive.

Another thing that worth to know is the place has splendid view of Penang Bridge, especially the night view. You can have a clear view without any obstruction and the view is just amazing. So remember to bring your camera if you want to dine here. We are certain you will go home smiling with those photos.

Next time you know :D but remember to ask about the fish price before ordering. It’s based on market rate..

    Christy
Through words of mouth…. that’s how we got to know.. :)
The price/portion are not really consistent so bear in mind lor.. like the fried squid was too little but the lala portion was quite generous. Again fish wise, it’s always market rate.. we couldn’t comment much.. must always ask for the price before you agreed

    Ah Shui
depends on what you order lor…

    thamchiak
aiyah.. kena potong so many times lioa.. must be smart to ask for price lor… the fish we ordered was sting ray

    Criz Lai
We didn’t bring our own fish.. maybe you can try it out and let us know :p

    allie
Maybe they have been inconsistent in pricing. Even some of our dishes were worth the money while some were just too little.. But one thing for sure.. we liked the view lor… hehehe

Wow, the fried squids looked fantastic but the ikan bakar might be to spicy for me. How much did the sting ray cost? By the way, what’s the hygiene condition there? Don’t dare to try the cockles…
