Penang Food | Laksa - Sungai Bakap

Since the last time we came here for the famous chai koay, we wanted to hunt more of the unique hawker’s food in this small town. This round we came here for the laksa – Sungai Bakap Laksa. Well, you might be asking why the heck coming here for laksa? Well, like what Huat Koay favourite tagline says, “Taste is the main factor, not location”.

The first observation we saw about the laksa here was that it came in a plate instead of a bowl. It had been some time since we last had a laksa which served with a plate. The laksa noodles were also different in the sense that it was shape like a round mold which Huat Koay said it looked a bit like muruku… Hmmm interesting, perhaps we might really have muruku laksa in the future? Anyone wants to start a business on that? Hehe…

The other specialty about this Sungai Bakap laksa is the additional ingredients we had not seen elsewhere, prawn crackers. We thought we were eating Jawa Mee instead… Hahaha. This laksa variation with prawn crackers was certainly unique and glad to say that we found this additional ingredient satisfactory. The crunchiness of the prawn crackers reminded us of the fried popiah we dipped into laksa soup. Also, another place that sells laksa with prawn crackers is at Kelang Lama, Kulim.

Besides laksa, the place also had cendol as dessert. Probably due to being a small town where raw materials can be quite cheap, the cendol was a lot and came with kidney beans, just like the one in Penang Road. But instead of crushed ice, what you would get was ice cubes to chill the cendol.

A food rendezvous that worth capturing and we shall come back to Sungai Bakap again for more of the local specialties. By the way, the owner also had another branch at Valdor (near Jawi at Seberang Perai) in case you think Sungai Bakap is a little too far. 

There is another stall in kulim housing area that serves prawn crackers as well but the taste is just so..so..so. Too bad, I can’t remember the exact location already.

    samyeap,

are you referring to the one at Kelang Lama next to a community hall? They sell laksa and ais kacang there and each prawn crackers costs RM0.20 but a different type of prawn crackers… Also, the adjacent house sells chai koay too..

few weeks back when my mum, sis and i visited my aunty who stayed in sg. bakap, she took us to the ‘famous sg bakap laksa’. the laksa is exactly like you describe - come in bowl, with prawn crackers, and there’s cendol too… BUT the one she took us was inside a coffee shop. the picture you show here was not inside a coffee shop but in a shed/shelter. wonder is it the same? (btw that coffee shop has one stall selling some pancakes or roti bakar and it is opposite the market, if not mistaken).
