Penang Food | Laksa on Trishaw - Cintra Street

Just as had we started our engine car for less than 5 minutes after our dessert earlier, we came to complete stop again. When we reached the Cintra Street and Campbell Street, something caught Tam Ciak’s eyes as he was looking at few people standing around a cart with one Indian uncle kept pouring something. Somehow our instinct told us, there must be something to eat there.
Our guess was right and hit the jackpot… hahaha. This Indian man called Uncle Veloo was selling laksa on a bicycle cart and the few people we saw earlier were actually enjoying bowls of laksa with guess what … fried popiah!!!
Uncle Veloo had been selling laksa for over 40 years and he would normally sell laksa here on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday as well as Sunday. The other three days he would normally sell the laksa at Swatow Lane.
The laksa ingredients as well as the kuihs sold are put on the cart with some plastic covers on top to prevent dirt. The laksa ingredients were very much basic, comprised of the laksa noodles, vegetables and onions. The laksa soup was then poured onto the the laksa and served to customers.
The laksa soup was kept warm using a charcoal pot which was more economical compared to the gas stove. Also, the charcoal pot actually helped to stabilize the heat to keep the laksa soup warm. Prawn paste or heh kor was already included into the soup and no wonder the soup tasted sour, spicy and sweet.
Besides laksa and fried popiah, Uncle Veloo also had some kuihs to offer like kuih talam, green bean kuih, nine layered kuih, kaya kuih, donut and few other varieties of nyonya kuih. If having laksa with fried popiah could not make you full, there was always a selection of kuih that you can devour to satisfy your appetite.
Given the bowl of laksa that cost RM2 per bowl, we thought it was a bit pricey for the portion and especially with the basic ingredients given. But then the experience of eating laksa standing at the road side was something really unique which we had not experienced before. This bowl of laksa looked similar to the one sold at Bawasah Road, unlike the one in Farlim or Peng Hwa Laksa.
Another aspect to note was that the bowls used was not properly cleaned as Uncle Veloo only rinsed with plain water and no detergent used. Also, the bowl was not dirty in a way but this cleaning method might be uncomfortable to certain people and this could be a little unhygienic for those hygiene conscious people…

This uncle’s concept is similar to the one near Swatow Lane loh. That uncle’s food is more popular and his pohpiah and nyonya kuih are DAMN good! Only sells in the afternoon.
It’s sold at the back lane behind Penang Plaza at Burma Road (where Giant is today, replacing Cold Storage). Look out for RIBS Restaurant at Burma Road and at the end of the road is GIANT Supermarket. Walk around to the back of the building and you will see an uncle selling laksa, pohpiah and nyonya kuih like this Uncle Veloo. His food is CONFIRMED good, endorsed by many local thamciak Penangites.
I agree that the laksa bowl is not very hygienic and dat is why I usually just buy the pohpiah and nyonya kuih from stalls like this. At least can enjoy the pohpiah and kuih from the plastic bags.

I remember this laksa well. I can almost taste it…..mmmm yum. The other favourite of mine is the kuih talam. Tam Ciak did well to spot it.
looks quite similar to the indian uncle laksa at one corner cafe.
seems like its very ‘heng’ now to sell laksa with fried popiah. i spotted another stall just like this one in prima tangung (tanjung bungah) area and another one in pulau tikus (outside Poly Cafe)

It looks really yummy!!!
I think it’s the same uncle who also sells in front of Prima Tanjung. Hmm he changed location already? I see people opt for “popiah basah” - popiah drench in the laksa soup.
When I was a kid, my grandma’s house always have this type of cart passing by in the evening, calling out “laksa, kuih!”. My ears were trained to be alert to the “peep peep” sound of the honk

we’re born and bred in Penang but do bear in mind Penang consists of island and mainland too.. there are many who know this laksa stall and we can bet there are also many who may not come across this stall…
We’re around the FTZ region AND definitely true blue Penangites… Shall we all sing Lagu Negeri Pulau Pinang together?
