Penang Food: Chulia Street Beef Koay Teow

14 October 2008 548 views 18 Comments

We had passed this place several times but deterred from eating here because of heavy traffic and difficulty to get car parks. Finally, we could not stand it anymore and decided we should have our beef koay teow today and we tried circling the place a few rounds before getting a parking slots at the back lane parallel to Chulia Street.

This place had always been packed every time we passed by and today was no exception as well. Most of the tables were full occupied before we managed to find some seats and that was even sharing with others. This place was quite warm and you have to be prepared to have some tissues ready, to wipe away the sweat or your oily skin….

We promptly made our order but still had to wait for a while judging by the number of tables still waiting for their turn. Despite that people were still willing to wait and luckily for us the waiting time was not that bad. There were only two choices for the beef koay teow with the small once cost RM7 while the big one cost RM8 per bowl.

While waiting for our order, we went around doing our usual stuffs like taking shots as well as the pretty cook like in the picture. Well, with a pretty cook preparing the beef koay teow for us, we would not mind to wait a while… hehehe 

The beef koay teow came at last and the warm aroma of koay teow th’ng with beef was quite appetizing. However, to our surprise the koay teow soup did not have similarly strong beef taste and it was quite delicious and suitable for those who prefer less strong beef smell.

The beef ball was made own their own and it was quite bouncy and tender as well. Even though the beef ball did not feel like solid ball but the texture was quite pleasing and enjoying too. This was a good bowl of beef koay teow which we liked it quite a lot especially the soup which did not emit strong beef smell.

Worth to try if you are a beef koay teow lover. But wait, if you are a beef koay teow lover, you would have come here before, right?

This stall was one of my favorite ever since they were by the back lane (under the jetty overhead bridge) along Lebuh Victoria years back before moving there. I hardly go there now as their pricing had increased a lot ever since. I frequent the corner coffee shop (which has a clearer soup base) at New Lane more now.

I tried it once but it was too pricey for me. You guys tried the one at Perak Road before, opposite salvation army? I think they are relatives. The one at Perak Road is cheaper and quite filling.

This is the best and my favourite beef koey teow soup in Penang. Usually I “WILL NOT” order any drinks here. After I settle a whole big bowl of koey teow soup, I will walk to Lebuh Ah Quee for a quick snack on the fruits and a double shot of oranges (RM1.2) hand squashed.

Where else can you find for a double oranges fresh juice? Check it out at http://www.foodpoi.com/2007/12/lebuh-ah-quee-fruit-stall/

yes, this is the one opposite the balai bomba.
Compared to the one at Perak Road, this one had higher price but then beef koay teow generally more expensive than the regular koay teow th’ng lor..

Too bad lor.. both of you can’t have it… but there’s always plenty of other choices :)

    duckie
You mean the hsbc at Beach Road? I thought they sell regular Koay Teow Th’ng only.. could have been mistaken….

    Sheryl
We tried the one at Perak Rd before too and it’s slight cheaper but not much. Didn’t see any Salvation Army when we went there though. What we remembered it was a corner lot coffee shop that sells economy rice too.. Are we referring to the same shop? :)

PTP, this entry is by far my *MOST* favourite post :D
Mainly becos I will DIE if this beef noodles stall gulung tikar in Penang *touch wood*!!!

I need my beef noodles fix from this place at least once a week. Ik know, I know…not healthy to consume so much beef but I really cannot resist this SUPER DUPER yummy beef noodles. When the pretty lady boss went to Korea for her vacation last month, me damn susah! No beef noodles to eat for about 10 days. :(

Everyone (old, young, locals, out-of-towners) I took to this place are immediately converted to beef noodles fans. Honest!

And Sheryl, sorry lah…but I have to TOTALLY disagree with you :P Hehehe…I have tried that beef noodles at the Perak Road kopitiam (opposite Salvation Army) which you kept advocating to us but to me, it absolutely, absolutely does NOT hold a candle to the Chulia Street one. I’d rather pay more and be fully satisfied than saving a few bucks for below average food. :D

And I agree with Gil Gil. The one at the HSBC food court SUX big time!

But then again, different strokes for different folks. :)

Wow… you really need your “fix” of beef koay teow every week eh. With you being their #1 fan, i’m sure the owner won’t gulung tikar one.. cause you’ll keep patronizing her stall mah… hhehhee

In fact, with you recommending many people to this stall, i’m sure the business will flourish… Maybe next round can ask the lady for you to makan free everytime you go there… hahaha

    Why not, eh? ;)

I tried this one before, and the taste is so so only for me. Yes, the soup is tasty and mild, the beef is fresh and tender but all these still don’t worth the money I need to fork out for.

I live in BM and there are 2 beef koay teow stall here, much or less the same. I still prefer the one in Kluang, Johor thou.
