Penang Dessert | Magazine Road Tang Yuen

The weather lately had been quite freezing cold with the rains continuously pouring quite heavily in some areas. We were passing by Komtar when the thought of dessert quickly had this stall flashed in our mind. The thoughts of having something sweet and warm quickly filled up our mind as we were eagerly moving towards the stall.

This stall is located just opposite the Traders Hotel and is famous for its tang yen or tong yuen (glutinous rice ball). The stall is quite visible as you passed Traders Hotel but sometimes you might miss it due to some vehicles that parked at the road side taking their orders. So if you really want to have this tang yen, be ready to slow down your car and park whenever you find a spot.. hehe

There are two types of syrup based or soup and also two sizes of the tang yuen. You can opt for either plain pandan white sugar syrup or the brown sugar ginger syrup. As for the sizes, there is either small like marbles or bigger one like squash ball which has peanuts filling inside.

We liked the tang yen here mainly due to its freshness as the tang yen were made on the spot as you can see at the video below. Once the tang yen was perfectly rolled, the uncle would drop them towards the boiling water to cook the tang yen. It would only take a while to cook them and the lady cook would transfer them to another bowl to cool them down. This process actually helped to retain the softness and gumminess of the tang yen and prevented it from being mushy.

On the cold weather like this, it was good to take the brown sugar ginger based syrup. Big or small tang yen, that would be up to you! There is another place you can have the tang yuen as well and it is located at Bawasah Road. Sugar Dynasty is just opposite Continental Bakery Shop.

Aiks… the uncle did not prepare the big sesame+peanuts tang yuen that day? That’s the best for me, taken with the brown sugar ginger soup :)

    Hi Tam
    - FREEZING COLD - you have no idea.

Arrived back in the UK on Saturday at 1.30pm (8.30pm in Penang) - after 2 weeks of the penang heat, the 10c temp was a bit of a shock.

How did I miss this stall - right opposite my bedroom. Will have a look C next time.

    cheers
    Nigel
