Hawker Center | Seberang Jaya Food Court

Some time ago, a reader left us a message saying there was a small food gem in Seberang Jaya that we ought to find out. According to him, the wan tan mee and char koay teow was the more famous stalls there. Medan Selera Seberang Jaya or the Seberang Jaya Food Court is located opposite SK Seberang Jaya 2.

Lately, we tried to explore more areas in the mainland thanks to our Prai Food Hunter (Guess who). We wanted to explore most of the places that most people may not have discovered yet especially in the mainland, from Butterworth to Prai, to Sungai Petani or even Nibong Tebal. Nevertheless, we will continue to explore Penang island as well as we believed there are more places we have yet to review.

Back to this Seberang Jaya Food Court. It was quite dark on the outside as some street lamps were not properly functioning. Once inside the Medan Selera though, the place was bright and well lit. Most tables were occupied when we reached there but we still managed to find an empty table.

Glancing over what other people ate on other tables, we noticed most of them had at least char koay teow or char koay kak or wan tan mee or the combination of them. Again, following the herd mentality, we ordered pretty much the same as what the general public did.

Char koay kak came first and that was one heck of a small plate… hahaha. Maybe we did not specify the size we want. It had some burnt smell like “chau hui tah” but at the same time it also had the fragrant of fried smell. The char koay kak tasted just average.

Char koay teow smelled nice although without much burnt smell like the char koay kak. It looked slightly darker too compared to the other char koay teow we tried. Nevertheless, the taste was quite satisfactory.

The wan tan mee was another authentic type that you can smell more of the bak ieu smell than the soya sauce smell. Yes, bak ieu (lard) was used for this wan tan mee too. A recommendation if you are bak ieu fan.

We ordered Pasembur as well and surprisingly we found it quite nice. Good companion as side dish.

Seberang Jaya Food Court offered another place for dinner besides the nearby Chai Leng Park Wai Sek Kai. The varieties were much less compared to that one but the traffic here was less as well. Just another alternative if you decide not to head to Chai Leng Park for dinner…

For fried koay teow over at the mainland, i would suggest one at chai leng park…
its in a corner coffee shop behind Wah Hong restaurant (same row as the 4D shops)…
its among the best i’ve tasted in PG fried by a old uncle…

at the same shop, the koay teow soup is nice and definately worthit with all the ingredients (pretty generous for the price)…
btw: its the cooked type (ie cook in a pot before serving)

oh btw the shop is only open during the lunch time…
