Fast Food | Big Apple Donuts & Coffee - Jusco Seberang Perai City

2 October 2008 747 views 13 Comments

When we had our first Krispy Kreme Donuts back in United States some years ago, our impression towards donuts changed forever. No longer the usual round, brown, unattractive donut glazed with sugar on top but rather we were introduced with varieties of donuts with different toppings and colour.

Wow, we remembered that was the first time donuts were sooooo colourful and delicious!!! We almost donuts almost every week while we were there then… Hahaha.

Even though Krispy Kreme has not reached Penang shore yet, but the news of Big Apple Donuts & Coffee out being opened here was something we were eagerly waiting for. Despite Dunkin’ Donuts being a player in Malaysia for some time, they had never set foot in Penang yet.. ki si lang nia!

Back to Big Apple Donuts & Coffee, their first Penang outlet was opened at Jusco Seberang Perai City (we dined at Ichiban Ramen here before) and not long after that another outlet opened at Gurney Plaza. That is aggressive marketing indeed. A word here though, you may find some similarities between Big Apple Donuts and J.CO Donuts & Coffee but these are entirely two different companies.

The outlet at Jusco Seberang Perai City is located at the ground floor, next to Pizza Hut and opposite Black Canyon. There is a window pane at one corner where you can view how donuts are made, which give you the assurance of the hygiene aspect as you can see each process of the donut making before they are served to you.

Making your order is also fuss free except sometimes you will need to look out for queue jumpers (well, third class mentality, what can we say?). You have a choice of having one, six or a dozen donuts package which most people will either take six or 12 donuts. Of course buying in bulks is definitely cheaper than buying single donuts. Economies of scale do apply here.

Duren-duren was Fei Fei’s and Tam Ciak’s favourite donut, basically it was stuffed with fresh durian paste… hahaha. We could really taste the strong durian smell minus the seeds. Something quite unique and creative to us. There was an advice that this Duren-duren donut must be consumed within 3 hours for its freshness.

Go Nutz had its top part dipped into chocolate sauce and subsequently with grounded nuts. The sight of the nuts can really make you go nuts the moment you put into your mouth and started munching. We could hear the sounds of nuts being crunched while we were enjoying this donuts.

Green Teaser was just an average green tea donut we tasted. The green tea was not that strong and it was sweeter than we thought. We expected this donut to have strong green tea taste but it was not. It was as if Green Tea jam being put on top. But we do appreciate the sunflower seeds sprinkled on top.

The Pink Panther was filled with strawberry chocolate which we thought was just ok as well. Tau Hua and Huat Koay said the Pink Panther had the smell like cough syrup… hehehe

The Alien indeed looked like alien, the presentation wise was not something eye catching but if you ever tasted it, you would definitely look for it especially if you are a chocolate lover. We did happen to notice how The Alien was made.

The strips above The Alien were actually chocolate bar that had been grated on top. Plus it was dipped with chocolate sauce too. Wow, perfect combination of chocolates… Yum!

The Choreo was in fact fillings of Oreo biscuits that had been crushed to bits and pieces and then sprinkled on top. It tasted like Oreo but the pieces were too small like sand and could not feel as if we were eating Oreo at all.

Snowy was a simple donut covered with icing on top.

We had hoped that Mango Tango will have more of Mango into it as it did not seem to have enough. The mango taste was nice though. Perhaps they could use mango paste instead of jam liked fillings? 

Whitnut had the peanut butter filling which some people might find it weird but again unique. Just so-so only…

Kiwi Blitz was tasty and had the strong kiwi smell. But do not expect chunks of kiwi as what you get is mostly kiwi jam type filling.

Cheese and lots of them. What else could we say about Say Cheeese. With so much of cheese sprinkled at the top, it was Tam Ciak’s favourite too, not because of the donut but because of the cheese… hehehe

With Big Apple outlets opened in Penang, we expected more to join the bandwagon although Missy Donut opened their outlet at Queensbay Mall but the response was lukewarm. Well, let us see who will be next to start another donut franchise here?

big apple is doing well by being one of the few big donuts chain to open in northern region…before their competitors come in!

Missy dohnuts in Queensbay Mall closed oredi(1 month ago). The same with the one at Tesco. Now only left with outlet at Gurney Plaza.

But now they have to compete with Big Apple. Susah for them because Missy Donut taste not so great and look so flat. Not enough huat. So sticky, the dough sticks to your teeth.Like not cooked enough. May be that’s why their 2 outlets closed oredi!

I have not tasted Big Apple yet …. will try when I go to Gurney Plaza soon.

Penang lang have discerning taste. Don’t mind spending money but must get value-for-money! Otherwise close shop liao. Anyone brave to open any kind of makan shop here better take note!

Shops oredi closed in Queensbay mall lately : Pastaria, Bakerszin, Chun, Missy Donuts,….. and there are some probably in the process of closing.
