Penang Seafood - Chai Seafood - Batu Maung

What do you do when you have a farewell, a birthday and a tight wallet? Well, you combined them into one and get a place to celebrate lor… Instead of going for any western food (birthday girl’s wish did not want to eat western food), we decided to eat seafood after debating for some time. Choose place to eat also not easy…

Chai Seafood is at the Batu Maung area along the main road, same row as the Wen Khai Primary School. The restaurant has two dining areas for smoking and non-smoking. We realized that this place was also featured in Rasa Malaysia food guide before.

Before the dishes served, the drinks will normally come first. We ordered ambala sour plums which came in one big jug. Immediate reaction was, “Wow, so much… can finish boh?”.

The ambala sour plums drink was very, very, very thick and sour. You can actually see lots of sour plums included in the drinks. If this is not sour, then we do not know what else is.

Before long, it was makan time!! Lala came first and the portion was a bit smaller than we expected. It had a strong aroma of salted soya beans (tau cheoh). The ginger and cili padi in the lala made the dish slightly extra spicy but it did taste good.

Fish curry was next with the gravy still boiling hot. Wow, the smell of this fish curry was enough to make us swallow our saliva. The gravy was quite thick with lots of curry leaves, onions, lady fingers.  However, the combination of fish used in this curry was not quite matching as the fish broke easily into small pieces and we had to pick up bits and pieces.

The specialty tofu was made with duck egg which was something different among the tofu we tasted but the quality control was not consistent. This is because Huat Koay happened to pick up a piece which the reverse side showed a large burnt area and his immediate comment was, “not satisfied”. Taste wise, you get the duck egg taste but it was nothing special apart from that.

The potato leaves was another specialty dish over here and we were quite happy and enjoyed the dish too. It was also cooked with salted bean curd and chili but the only complain we have was the portion was too much small. Where got enough for Tua Pui???

Belacan fried chicken came soonafter and it was the dish of controversy. It was supposed to be belacan fried chicken but Huat Koay and Tam Ciak said they could not taste the belacan in the fried chicken. It tasted like normal fried chicken only. Yet, Fei Fei, Tau Hua and two other friends said they did taste the belacan smell although it was not that strong. Even the appearance did not look much like belacan chicken.

Once we had finished, the waitress came to chat a while and eventually suggested us to order snake beans fried with shrimps saying how delicious it was.

After some persuasion, we agreed. But then, when the dish came, the high expectation was met with a letdown as the dish was nothing interesting but just a simple dish.

Though some dishes were quite nice and delicious, the serving’s portions were smaller than expected. The good thing about dining here is you are guaranteed the freshness of the seafood as they are just available outside for you to choose. For this meal, we spent RM97.00 which we think was a bit expensive judging by the portions served, although the freshness was there. Our stomachs were just beginning to feel full after the meal.

This place serves kick-ass Hokkien Char! If you have not tried the Hokkien Char, order it the next time you go there. You can just order a big plate of Hokkien Char to be shared amongst you or you can order individual plates for yourselves.

Can’t rememher how much it costs but I think it’s less than RM4 for a single person’s portion.

Oh, one more thing. Don’t forget to request for their sambal to go with the Hokkien Char. To-die-for!!!
