Penang Restaurant | Nyonya Breeze
After our month long hunt for Japanese food around Penang, we finally switched back to something closer to the heart. A mixture of local cuisine that most of us familiar with; nyonya cuisine.
We went to Nyonya Breeze the other day based on recommendation from Fei Fei’s friend. Nyonya Breeze is located at Abu Siti Lane, same road as the ANBA Coconut except they are both on different ends of the road. Another place to enjoy Nyonya food is just located next to the Ferry Terminal.
Their signature white and green was clearly visible the moment we turned into this road from Macalister Road. Tam Ciak said Nyonya Breeze’s logo somehow resembled one pharmacy logo he saw some time ago. Too much imagination, Tam Ciak!
The place was as expected nyonya style with the wooden tables and chairs in dark colour. The tables were big and wide while the seats were actually square type stools.
While waiting for your foods to be served, you can opt to look around at the decoration. There was one particularly big décor that explained the history of Nyonya at one corner of the wall. Well, it had to be significant or else why waste money to put it that big, right?
Otak-otak came first was quite average though we hope it can be more to fit our big stomachs. You get the taste chunks of fish inside still and Fei Fei said he liked the leaves that used together to make the otak-otak, it was delicious to him.
The belacan dish was something unique and unusual. This was the first time we forgot to find out the actual name of the dish as we were observing the dish for some time while Huat Koay was taking the photos.
The presentation wise did not appeal to us but the moment you put it into your mouth, wow!! This is great stuff, of course mainly due to the strong, pungent smell of belacan. Somehow this dish was quite addictive.
Inche Kabin came with prawn crackers but the pieces could have been a little bit bigger. Perhaps the intention was for easy to chew but for Tua Pui, we do hope for something that could satisfy us. The inche kabin taste was average, like the other nyonya food.
Curry Kapitan came in thick gravy but was not too spicy. The portion again could be a little bit more.
We ordered Gandum for dessert and found it to be too sweet for all of us. Too much sugar used for this dessert already. None of us could finish them although the dessert bowl was quite small only.
Nyonya Breeze does offer excellent choices of peranakan cuisine but we do hope the portion however can be a little bit more. We spent about RM80+ this round which we thought might be a little pricey but Tau Hua said typically nyonya food does cost higher…. Wonder why..?

Random Photos

I have been there once, but I still believe there’s better nyonya food out there. This place is not a bad one, some food is nice. But the eating environment don’t have the NYONYA feel.
