Penang Restaurant | EL Mondo Pizza

The original woodfire pizza in town” – that’s the tagline for El Mondo’s Pizza, located at the ground floor of Krystal Point, few shops away from the 7-Eleven. Slightly further down, you will find another Pizza outlet: Domino’s Pizza.

Not sure how the craving for pizza started, but having passed by Krystal Point numerous times but never venturing into this restaurant, a group of us decided to give it a try and see whether the place truly lived up to its tagline.

For starters, don’t be fooled by the restaurant name as it does not serve only pizza, but the whole Italian fare from appetizers to pasta and Italian sodas. Set lunches are also available.

However, not to be deterred from our original objective, we looked purposefully at the pizza menu ONLY (we are very focused people *ahem*!). There are several flavours to choose from, and even one ‘design your own topping’ option.

We must have looked very undecided as the restaurant owner dropped by to give a helping hand and recommended the 2 most popular flavours BBQ chicken and El Mondo’s special.

In the end we opted for the BBQ chicken and Hawaiian Chicken (old favourite) and completed the meal with a serving of fried squid (we must respect our senior food lover who requested for the high cholesterol dish ).

As for drinks, we ordered mango smoothie, strawberry milkshake and one more adventurous person took the ‘cool’ blue Italian soda. Another place for Italian food hangout is at i-Avenue.

The outcome:
Environment:
Lighting is dim and cosy. Rather crowded if large group (>10 people). The woodfire oven takes pride of place at the back of the restaurant.

Service Good. Helpful staff. This restaurant offers delivery services.

Food
Pizza crust is light and not too filling. Senior food lover found some burnt bits but the rest of us were okay. The BBQ chicken flavour is very distinctive and you can’t go wrong with Hawaiian Chicken J.

The fried squid (very big squid, by the way!) was rather rubbery and tasted as though it had just been taken out from deep freeze and put in hot oil.

Price
Don’t expect Pizza Hut prices. You pay for the uniqueness – a regular size (8 inch) pizza (cut into 6 pieces) costs RM28.

As for meeting the tagline, well… don’t know about being the best, but it’s definitely an experience worth trying for the atmosphere!

Hey, I tried the Fish & Chips there. not bad. big and chunky…
however, I would like to recommend something off topic, You should also try the restaurant just next to it, called Eighteen. They serve good pasta ( My favs are Con Salmon or the Scallops Tomato based pasta).. Of course, If you want pasta, best you go Bella Italia, but 18 is my second best choice since i stay around that area. :)

I tried the pizza there, not so nice lo. the bottom is too thick. i had try the pizza stall at Northam Beach cafe, although the topping is not much as it, bt i like the bottom(roti) very much. u should try la.bt if u prefer the topping is nice as pizza hut, then i think not suit for u lo.

The Pizza topping and cheese is like NUTMEG DIP IN SALT…. so little … just like eating only bread….. (agreed Sharon’s comment)

The pizza here still better than Pizza Hut lar… hahaha
Yea, except their original woodfire thing and their atmosphere… the pizza is ok lor…

The Bella Italia in Pulau Tikus is another to go if you really fancy pizza with light crust. The same goes for Tiramisu. We had seen a family actually dining here ordered only Tiramisu… But the one at El Mondo.. haven’t tried yet …ehehehe

Though your preference towards this shop is different, but as long as it suits your taste. We’re happy to know that.. If it’s not there’s always other alternatives, right? ;)

I remembered 10 years ago, I had a good firewood pizza in a residential house, somewhere near Penang Chinese Swimming Club. A few years later, it moved to HongKong cafe in Penang road but the taste was not as good as 10 years back.

Maybe I will give el-mondo pizza a try.

    emily,

Perhaps as a way for customer feedback and also future improvements, you can help to be more specific about the parts that went wrong..

Every now and then, we’ll try to keep in touch with the owner to tell them of the genuine feedback we have on their restaurants… Of course, whether they choose to listen or not is another issue :)

DEAR OWNER OF EL MONDO PIZZA,

    DEAR OWNER,
MAY I KNOW WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU COOKING OVER THERE. SOUP WASN`T TASTY. ITS LIKE EATING SOMETHING THAT I USED TO BUY FROM TESCO, OPENING THE SOUP CAN , BOILING IT A FEW MINUTES AND THAT`S IT. SUCH A CHEAT WON`T MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL. NO WONDER YOUR SOUP IS SO CHEAP BUT LACK OF QUALITY.
AND WHEN I ASK YOUR STAFF, THEY DENIED THAT ITS INSTANT SOUP. I`M A 5` STAR HOTEL EXECUTIVE CHEF AND DEFINETELY I CAN DIFFERENTIATE WHAT IS INSTANT AND WHAT`S NOT. LIAR!!!
YOU SAY YOUR PIZZA IS CHARCOAL BAKED. ANOTHER LIAR. ITS JUST OVEN BAKED. WHY DO YOUR COMPANY LIKES TO CHEAT PEOPLE SO MUCH.
WELL, I WON`T GO TO YOUR SHOP AGAIN, I WOULD RATHER GO TO BRAVO ITALIANA. THE SOUP IS FRESH, HOMEMADE WITH LOTS OF QUALITY INGREDIENTS. THE PIZZA IS THIN CRUST, WELL THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT THEY ARE HONEST AND SINCERE. WELL, SURELY I WILL GO AGAIN. I WILL CERTAINLY INVITE MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY.; FURTHERMORE, THE WAITER AND WAITRESS ARE FRIENDLY AND SMILING FACE. BRAVO!!!

I have eaten Italian food all over Italy, in the NorthEnd in Boston and NYC. I must say that El Mondo’s pizza and pasta is the worst Italian food I have ever eaten. I tried 3 times with different pizzas and pastas and could not finish it. Domino’s pizza is more like Italian than El Mondo.

    greetings,
the other day you published your restaurant in a single full paged advertisement. no matter what you do, there won`t be people interested in your restaurant because your italian food sucks. there`s not enough taste and flavour. i went to bravo italiana. the carbonara was fantastic, the lasagne was good and pizza was very delicious. that is called italian food.
your italian food is a disgrace. your said charcoal baked pizza was a lie. ia tak boleh dimakan langsung. it was not great. no need to advertise next time. waste of money. anyway, no one will even go. bye

    adrian,

Just to get things straight, it was the restaurant that published on the The Star (Friday, April 10) and they invited the journalist to do the review. Yes, we read about it too…

Thanks for sharing your opinions cause this will continue to be one heck of debate between Bravo Italiana, El Mondo, and perhaps Bella Italia.

You know there is another place that actually serve Italian food as well? It’s QEII at weld quay. They don’t serve 100% Italian but modern European food of which Italian is part of them…
