Penang Food: Anson Road Char Koay Teow

We just had our dinner at Fei Fei’s home for some discussion when it was about time we felt we wanted to have supper. Good digestive systems, huh? Anyway, Fei Fei suggested we try the Char Koay Teow nearby so that we can take some photos for postings too. Not a bad idea, is it not?
This stall has been around over few generations and Fei Fei can testify that. It has been selling Char Koay Teow for over 30 years and Fei Fei had been eating his char koay teow that long. The char koay teow stall is normally located at two places. In the afternoon, it is located at corner of Jalan Dunlop and Anson Road and by night time, the stall will move to opposite side of Anson Road.

The char koay teow is another charcoal based frying style and that is really traditional. Once in a while, the seller will use the fan to increase the heat intensity. At other times, he will cook with one hand and frying the koay teow with another. You will see sparks of the charcoal flying around while he was fanning that. Hmm talk about extra ingredients in the char koay teow? hehe

To us, the aroma of charcoal fried koay teow somehow smells nicer compared, perhaps it has a burnt smell that really brings out the taste of original char koay teow. (Maybe, this is due to the extra ingredients?) Also, the koay teow used did not break easily.
Despite being famous, the price of char koay teow sold here is relatively cheap compared to other famous char koay teow. There are no special ingredients like big prawns or mantis prawns, rather the char koay teow is just plain simple one and charcoal fried. Each plate cost about RM2.80 for regular and about RM3.50 for large size.
With recent changes in petrol price, going up fast but coming down slowly, some of these hawkers may also increase their price. But as we all aware, once the price of these foods is up, it will be hard to come down anymore. Hence, the price stated here may be different from the actual

The customers coming to buy char koay teow are from diverse background and races. The queuing time is considerably long if you want to taste this char koay teow but come after 10pm, which is the peak time and you will need to wait even longer.

Still, there are many customers willing to wait to get even a packet of the char koay teow. Most of the people will choose to pack and only a small amount of people will prefer to dine there. This is due to limited seats available and you may have to squat in order to enjoy the freshly fried char koay teow.

I never tried this one. I agree with email2me on the Kampung Jawa Char Koay Teow. There is another one which is using charcoal to fried the koay teow. It is located at the Terengganu Road market. I used to call it Terengganu Road market, I am not sure the exact name. I hope you know which one I am mentioning.

Another charcoal one is at Kimberly St where the seller put mantis prawn as well.. next to the dessert stall at night…
The Kampung Jawa one is also another one….
This is definitely one of the best CKT in Penang. In the evening, it is located at the junction of Siam Road (not Jalan Dunlop) and Anson road.
At night, they moved across the road to Anson Road.
no wonder every time pass by there
seem like quite a lot people

That’s right Andrew,
This uncle sells from one place to another but luckily it’s just across the road… So it’s not hard to find but got to know when is the right time to go so that there won’t be long queue… :):)
thamchiak…
next time, make a point to stop there…
don’t just pass by only lor…:D:D
I’ve heard so much of this stall but never got round to trying it. Mainly becoz I am so disillusioned with the many supposedly famous CKT stalls (eg: Lorong Selamat, Sisters) which I *hate* with a vengence! Soooo overpriced and super lansi attitude. Makes me wanna swear off CKT forever.
Thank God for authentic stalls like this Apek that restores my faith in CKT sellers in Penang. Still decently-priced and tastes authentically good.
Thanks for sharing this, guys. Have definitely added this place to my places-to-makan-b4-i-die list.

You should go try this out. It’s much, much cheaper than Lorong Selamat or Sisters. Some more, we like it because the uncle uses charcoal one… just like the way we used to have when we were kids.. Reminiscence is the word.
Give it a try!!
is Siam Road (not Dunlop Road) at the evening before dark…
