Penang Food | Sungai Bakap Chai Koay

A food gem that is hidden inside town of Sg. Bakap is the infamous Chai Koay (steamed dumpling).
This shop has been operating for generations and still drawing crowds from all over the places including outstation folks.
There are a few shops over here at this area but this one is known to be the original.
There is also another similar shop opposite which is run by same family member.

The structure and design of this shop remains nostalgic like 70’s … it wooden structure is still standing strong and the decorations on the wall look like typical kopitiam we used to visit during younger days.
You can choose from two types of chai koay: mangkuang or kuchai. The chai koay skin is very delicate and thin that it will break easily, exposing the fillings if you use too much force. Yet, the taste of this chai koay in your mouth will simply let this off.

Besides chai koay, you can get the regular dim sum dishes too or you can order some other recommended dishes like fried tanghoon and fish soup. These are also favourites among the patrons to this shop.
Dim Sum

Fried Tanghoon

This is a recommended chai koay shop to go if you ever go to Sungai Bakap or Nibong Tebal or Jawi. The shop is opened everyday, only in the morning. If you happened to be here at afternoon, why not give the Laksa a try. The laksa is a bit different from the regular we had

Stay tuned!!
Is there another shop famous for the chai koay? I have been there sometime back but cannot remember exactly where it is. There are two units; one famous for the chai koay and the other tang hoon and fried noodles. May be it’s a different place altogether.
Fortesfidelis,
There are two main ones we are aware of, this is one of them. Another one is opposite this shop which was opened by the uncle or relative of the owner.
Both also famous for chai koay and tang hoon. But we normally frequent this shop compared to the one opposite. Maybe it’s our preference
